I'd be willing to bet the re-released GC on BR would be poor sellers and the sets of *all* new toons would sell well.
I think I have to break with you, Bob. Most of us agree the LTs are highly oversaturated and that general consumers don't know (for the most part) which cartoon is which. Minor releases like the Super Stars seem okay, but otherwise WHV needs to move on from traditional, mass retail releases. They're done. The reality, I believe, is that WHV would have had a tough time with the Platinums no matter what they did. Do them as they did, and we complain as we are now. Do all-new cartoons and run the very high risk of a big loss due to restoration costs, which is what would have likely happened as it's clear the series is on shaky ground with hardly any restoration. As for why the Golden Collections faded out, I don't think it's due to any single factor other than the time-honored home video tradition of diminishing sales with successive volumes. The way to best minimize that effect is to specifically target the folks like us who would follow a collector's series to the end. And we're not found at Target or Best Buy.

The Golden Collections are still in stock and readily available at Amazon. In fact, Amazon is selling a set of all six volumes of the Golden Collection for $100.

I think I read on Wiki that the GC's were re-issued in 2011 in a smaller footprint - so smaller boxes/cases. However, I could be wrong about that

For those who want NEW Looney Tunes on DVD here is the newest upcoming release. Sylvester Cat and Hippety Hopper:'Marsupial Mayhem' Sylvester & Hippety clash in this 18-short release with 15 New-to-DVD cartoons! All newly remastered! The single-disc release is scheduled for April 23rd, priced at $19.98 SRP. These timeless cat vs "giant mouse" gems include Sylvester's riotous pursuit of Hippety after the 'roo escapes the zoo in Hop, Look and Listen, Sylvester's hapless attempts to impress his son Sylvester, Jr. in Pop 'Im Pop! and the acclaimed Hoppy-Go-Lucky, a brilliant send-up of John Steinbeck's classic Of Mice and Men. And that's just the beginning of the bounding, bouncing, cat-confounding fun in this cartoon cornucopia from the heyday of Warner Bros. animation! #518 HOP, LOOK & LISTEN #576 HIPPETY HOPPER (previously on Golden Collection 6) #606 POP 'IM POP! #641 WHO'S KITTEN WHO? #659 HOPPY-GO-LUCKY #698 CATS AWEIGH! #800 BELL HOPPY #827 LIGHTHOUSE MOUSE #852 TOO HOP TO HANDLE #871 SLAP-HOPPY MOUSE #902 MOUSE-TAKEN IDENTITY (previously on Mouse Chronicles) #939 CAT'S PAW #951 GOLDIMOUSE AND THE THREE CATS (previously on Golden Collection #5 #969 HOPPY DAZE #972 BIRDS OF A FATHER #988 FISH AND SLIPS #1015 CLAWS IN THE LEASE #1021 FREUDY CAT From the moment they teamed up, the endlessly-persistent Sylvester J. Pussycat, Sr. and the hyperactive young kangaroo Hippety Hopper would go on to became one of Warner Bros. most reliably hilarious animated duos. Now, together for the first time on DVD, it's the best of the failure-prone feline and spring-loaded little marsupial in 18 classic cartoons re-mastered to all their Golden-Age-of-Animation glory!

WB had begun a long-term project restoring the cartoons. Especially the pre-1948 former a.a.p. titles which had reverted to Warner Bros. when they bought out Turner. Those 300 plus cartoons could be restored for the first time, since Warner had retained the original color separations all along. Supposedly, all releases from 1957 on had originated from 16mm film sources.
Actually for the pre-1950 Looney Tunes, aap received 35mm positive I.B. Technicolor release prints from Warner Brothers to make 16mm reduction printing negatives for television syndication on 16mm film. In the 1980's Turner went back to the 35mm positive I.B. Technicolor release prints and transferred them to 1" video tape for new television syndication. At the time this was quite an improvement over the old 16mm prints. These same tapes were used for Turner's Looney Tunes Golden Laserdisc Collections and VHS Tape releases. Turner at the time did not have access to the original YCM Technicolor negatives, that is why they did not look as good as the post 1950 Looney Tunes cartoons on laserdisc & VHS tape from Warner Home Video. It was a matter of "Warner owned the original negatives, but not the rights to the cartoons. Turner owned the rights to the cartoons, but not the original negatives."

If you're not an insider on these discs, Paul, you should probably not act like you know every last detail about what goes on with these sets.
I was involved in the Golden Collection DVDs, locating original titles & vintage interview footage (Including the Mel Blanc interviews).. After the success of the first volume, the original plan was for only 8 volumes, the last two got cancelled. As mentioned above, there were not enough good Bugs Bunny cartoons to continue further. I am sorry that Daffy Dilly did not get the Golden Collection treatment (it would have been on volume 7 or 8) as we had found the original CineColor title sections in 16mm, but they need some cleaning up to match the 35mm Blue-Ribbon re-issue negatives. When the cartoon got its DVD release on the Daffy Duck Frustrated Fowl DVD, the Family division of Warner Home Video saw no reason to spend the money to restore the original titles, so the Blue-Ribbon titles were used for that DVD. That was frustrating as we already did the High resolution transfer. I am hoping it will make it to a Platinum Blu-ray release.

"Beanstalk Bunny", "Hare Brush", "A-Lad-in His Lamp", "Rabbit Every Monday", "Wild and Woolly Hare", "Rabbitson Crusoe", "The Fair-Haired Hare", "Hare Splitter", "Hare Lift", "Captain Hareblower", "Yankee Doodle Bugs", "Half Fare Hare", "No Parking Hare", "Hare-Less Wolf", "Bugsy and Mugsy", and "Knights Must Fall" are all good Bugs Bunny cartoons and could fill another Bugs disc. And there are enough unreleased Tweety and Sylvester cartoons to fill two discs. These may surface in the Super Stars range, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Overall, its hard to think of a major franchise that's been handled poorer than the Looney Tunes, what with poorly considered reboots like Looney Tunes Unleashed.
For the record, I'm a fan of that show (Looney Tunes Unleashed) and I know a tone of people that also are as well, as this collection of fan art will show: Looney Tunes Unleashed]

Its amazing how this thread began with cartoons that were yanked off of TV for "PC" reasons, but is now about Looney Tunes in general... :D

Yes, I agree. Since there is NO word about the Censored 11, the topic has drifted to Looney Tunes in general. Believe it or not, at one time there was talk of putting the "Censored 11" as a bonus feature, complete with Whoopie Goldberg telling us how wrong they are, on the Golden Collections (probably volume 8). Tucking it away as a bonus feature (requiring additional menus to go through) with a disclaimer introduction you could not skip past seemed almost agreeable to Warner Home Video,

My local Costco sells a boxed set of all 6 G.C.s for even less than that. And yes, they come in standard width DVD cases now instead of Digibook format.

Neat, I got the first two Waves of the Walt Disney Treasures years after the fact at Costco in a boxset, minus the tins and cards.

Wouldn't all of the work to restore the original titles have been done in house at Warner Brothers? This seems to confirm my theory that WB has a punnishing managerial accounting system that requires any time spent restoring the Looney Tunes to be justified by income received on a specific release. That seems why we continue to see so many repeats on LT releases (the same could probably be said for Scooby Doo).

Speaking of which...has anyone ever confirmed one way or the other whether the repeated cartoons from the two Super Stars DVDs which ended up on those two "three cartoons on one DVD" releases were cropped for widescreen or released in full frame? I have read arguments that WB probably wouldn't make the effort to remaster them for a budget release (and I agree), but some were on the Platinum Blu-Rays in full frame, right? I don't remember off the top of my head which ones they are and whether they were on the Blu-Rays or not -- did anyone buy those two DVDs (Unleashed and Best Of Bugs Bunny)?

Warner Brothers commissions restoration experts to do the restoration work. Here is the amount of work done by each division. Warner Archive: The best currently available video transfer is used, no restoration. Warner Family Entertainment Division: New film to video Hi-Resolution transfers are created, but no additional digital restoration work is done (including the replacement of original titles from other film sources). Warner Classics: New film to video Hi-Definition transfers are created. Various film sources may be used to restore missing or altered footage. Full digital restoration is performed on the new Hi-Definition transfers. Just compare the first Tom & Jerry DVD transfers (Family Division) to the new Blu-ray transfers (Classic Division). Unfortunately the packaging rarely tells you which division is creating the discs. In general all Looney Tunes releases EXCEPT "GOLDEN COLLECTION", "SPOTLIGHT COLLECTION", and "PLATINUM COLLECTION" come from the Family Entertainment Division. There are a few one-off exceptions like 'THE ESSENTIAL BUGS BUNNY"', "MOUSE CHRONICLES", and I believe "THE ACADEMY AWARD COLLECTION".
