I'm curious have any of the Blu-Ray or HD-DVD titles been listed with 7.1 channel sound in either uncompressed or DD or DTS?

To me it would be silly for SONY who has several titles that were mixed into 7.1 to not use that format with the new technology!

I'd love to see LEGENDS OF THE FALL in Hi-Def and to hear it in it's original 7.1 channel mix!

More Blu-ray:

Eagle Rock Entertainment: "20 music titles from artists including George Benson, Usher, the Black Crowes, Miles Davis and the Pixies"

And also titles for Japan only:
Angel Seekers, from Air TBS
New Cinema Paradise [they mean Cinema Paradiso?], from Asmik Ace Entertainment, Inc.
Steamboy, from Bandai Visual Company, LTD.

It's unlikely because SDDS 7.1 used the old 70MM mix method of having half left & right center channels.

Current 7.1 systems are a mono SURROUND BACK sent to 2 rear speakers.

Juan,

Your color-coding idea is AWESOME. Nils, can you just copy and past his code (from the email if not directly from his post) so that your updated list in the first few posts uses the same color convention? That really makes it easy to see what's what at a glance!

:emoji_thumbsup: Excellent idea/job Juan!

I thought it might also be a good idea to separate titles by studios, as it will be helpful to predict which titles that are currently exclusive to one format may in short time come out on the other, depending on how well these titles sell on each format.

Well, instead of looking at studio primarily, I think we could focus on the movies first, but adding the studio information. Something like this:

Where D=Disney; F=Fox; L=Lionsgate; P=Paramount; S=Sony/MGM; U=Universal; W=Warner

Disney, Fox and Sony are Blu-ray exclusive.
Universal is HD DVD exclusive.
Paramount releases the same titles on both formats
Warner releases in both formats, but more on HD DVD (for the moment)

So I don't think you'll see any 'blue' titles change color. Unless Universal concedes in the following weeks, the only development we can reasonably expect is some 'red' titles by Warner changing to 'green'. A good example of this would be Goodfellas, which was displayed at CES in the Blu-ray booth.

Back to you, Nils...

What a fantastic list. And looking at it, if the Warners red titles make it to Blu-ray, there's only one HD DVD exclusive title on there that I'd want at launch (if I were buying into the whole HD thing at launch, which I'm not).

Think I'll mark Christmas 2007 as being the time to go Blu...

You're welcome DaViD.

You know, all that talk about downrezzing is really depressing. I'd rather discuss hidef movies on shiny discs. :D

His disclaimer:
As a further disclaimer, I would note that some of these announced titles are not even on DVD yet, let alone in theaters. An example of this would be Superman Returns. Furthermore, because HD-DVD appears to be coming coming out at least two months before Blu-ray, its natural to expect more title announcements for that format; once BD players get closer to their release date, we should see more title announcements.

Another potential problem with early Sony releases will be that many are on BR-25's and encoded with MPEG-2. There have been claims made that the MPEG-2 bitrate used would be around 16-20 Megabit/sec. VBR due to the lower storage capacity of BR-25 using the less efficient MPEG-2 codec.

That's crappy broadcast quality (or less) for 1080p video (when properly transmitted broadcast TV uses lesser 1080i and 720p at 19 Megabits/sec)!! That's insane! If Sony is so gung-ho about sticking with MPEG-2 encoders why wouldn't they make sure their films were released on BR-50 discs so the video bitrate could be expanded to 25-40 Megabits/sec and still allow for an average film length and high res. lossless audio?

Of course, it all comes down to A/V comparisons. If all the other studios are using MPEG-4 AVC HP or VC-1 at their optimal transparent-to-the-master bitrates and really high quality lossless high res. audio and they look and sound superior to Sony releases then perhaps it will force Sony to start using at least MPEG-4 AVC HP encoders (Sony still has patents in that codec, and probably wouldn't want to support Microsoft by using VC-1) and lossless audio.

Also, you better hope and pray that Sony re-scans the restored 65/70mm IP's of Lawrence of Arabia at at least 4k, gets Robert A. Harris to supervise the complete transfer and color correction, and uses this digital master to create the 1920x1080p files for Blu-Ray!!

AND uses the best supervised, digital restoration soundtrack masters for a high resolution lossless track!

The current HD transfer of LoA is atrociously bad! This was the HD transfer used for the Blu-Ray demos and you could still see the ugly edge enhancement placed on that older HD master.

There are way more titles that I want on Blu-Ray, but I must admit that HD-DVD has just enough titles that makes me think about adopting that format too. But I'll just be patient and hope those titles come to Blu-Ray too I guess.

Just to be correct, 1080p24 contains less information, at least in uncompressed form, than "1080i" which has a 30 Hz framerate [60 Hz fieldrate]. Even 1080i30, which would only be an issue with Oklahoma! and Around the World in 80 Days, has no more. Now, if the transfers are really good, not filtered to the hilt, they may require more bitspace in compressed form, but still the overall bit allocations are more favourable than for ATSC broadcast.
The 19 Mbps figure is basically the peak capacity of 8-VSB in a 6-MHz channel with after correction, and is not normally all allocated to one HD presentation -- 16 Mbps, I think, would be a more usual figure, and with "robust VSB" being rolled out to compensate for the serious problems with ATSC, it may well drop as low as 12. Someone with better technical information feel free to correct me, I'm too discouraged with ATSC to do it myself, but that was what I remember from my research.
To think, we could have had MUSE, which was robust and made for sterling NTSC downconverts, fifteen years ago. The current Lawrence of Arabia transfer was made for MUSE high definition LaserDisc. I think they'd want to do a new one, since that transfer was on the old 1035-active-line system, and while the basic scan structure is the same, it does result in a certain defree of distortion.
