I heard that the "modern" version of Dumbo omits scenes of the crows except for the last one...
If Disney does another "Fantasia"-style lie, let's all abstain from purchasing the disc.
It would basically be saying, "Disney, we don't like your self censorship and we show it with our money!"
I sent a letter to the Disney company pleading for the "Censored 5" films (Fantasia, Make Mine Music, Melody Time, Saludas Amigos, and Who Framed Roger Rabbit) to be recalled and replaced with the original, uncut versions.
I have yet to hear a reply...

(This letter was supplemented with a thick petition with about 60 signatures just from Toonzone.net's message board.)
So, how about the new slogan... "NO ORIGINAL VERSION = NO SALE!"

They want to be POLITICALLY correct in the 21st century with censorship of OLD catalog films (Dumbo, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, etc...), yet they release Bubble Boy??!??!?!?
I don't know does this make sense to anyone else????!?!

It's about a boy in a "bubble" because of his sickness/disease, he CANNOT live outside this sealed bubble...
He has to be VERY VERY careful when moving about, think Seinfeld episode...
You'll probably catch the commercial preview this weekend on TV...

The relevant quote is

You might not be aware that several minutes were snipped from DUMBO so long ago that nobody remembers them. In a very fluid movie, you'll note quite a number of sudden fade outs and fades-ins right in the middle of music cues. Well .... there were several scenes with the jive-talking crows - the ones who are NOT black stereotypes, just cool cats who are the hippest bunch in the movie. They showed it to us at UCLA about 1973, and in the print we saw, the crows show up at regular intervals to comment like a Greek chorus on the events of the film - criticizing the elephants mostly, and feeling sorry for Mrs. Jumbo and Dumbo. And they were funny. But since they're cool characters, talkin' jive, they had to go! In the cut print shown now, the crows barely show up to teach Dumbo how to fly with the magic feather.(Savant always loved the REAL moral of DUMBO: if you wanna fly, you gotta get drunk!)

Will this be restored in the upcoming dvd. Hardly likely. For all intents and purposes Disney has succeeded in wiping this from people's memory (unlike Song of the South). If they claim it's uncensored, yes I'll yell. But I'll be buying Dumbo if this is the only version available.

Alex, I think Joel was making a point by asking the question about bubble boy, to show what the target audience is for that film.
Yes I would like to have Dumbo unaltered but over the years sensibilities have changed drastically in this country. In a film targeted for children, I have no problems with cuts of some sort being made to keep content away from children which may be considered "objectionable" by some in today's society.
What I would like to see Disney ultimately do is put out a PC version of their films under their gold collection label, for children, then Under their Treasures label, which is geared towards adults, put the original films in unaltered form with appropriate commentary on the issues surrounding the film. This way we the film enthusiasts win out, then at the same time we have a version fit for children in todays world.

I wish that Disney would use the capabilities of DVD to have the full version available via seamless branching for adults who want to enjoy the original movies.
They could do this for a lot of their films, while still giving out the censored versions for the wee lil' ones.
