I have a friend at work that just entered the Mac fray and bought
his first system, an iMac.

The other day he accidentally dragged the DOWNLOAD folder
that appears in the new Leopard dock into the Trash Can.

He tells me that he figured he would just open TRASH and
drag it back, but in doing so, it comes back as a tiny icon and
none of his files actually download to that folder anymore.

The DOWNLOAD folder is still in his trash can. How can he
successfully restore that folder to his dock to allow files to
download top it?

I'd try to replicate this situation and experiment on my computer,
but I'm a bit afraid of running into the same problem he has.

Thanks in advance for the help.

I could be wrong about this but if his Downloads folder is still in the Finder in his USER account he should be able to just drag it to the right of the dock and it should create a new Downloads stack. If the Downloads folder is gone from the Finder, maybe dragging it from the trash to the Finder will restore it and he may have to drag it from the Finder to the dock to recreate the stack.

As for downloads being saved to the Downloads folder it should be simple as going into the browsers preferences and set it to save downloads there.

I'm uncertain about the special mac folders, but can't he create a new Downloads folder in his user directory, then place that in the dock?

As Daryl says, you can set Safari and Firefox to download wherever. I created my own Downloads folder in Tiger; when I go Leopard it magically appeared in the Finder sidebar as well.

Ron -- he needs to open the finder, click on his user in the sidebar and then drag the download folder back into his user. From there he can drag it into the dock -- the stack in the dock is really just a shortcut to a folder that behaves as a stack just by virtue of having been put into the dock.

That was a terrible sentence -- let me know if it didn't make sense.
