Dave, Since you live in CA, you might want to check to see if your wiring is run in Conduit, CA electrical code requires conduit of all electrical wiring, not sure how far back that goes and how old the place you live in is.

If you have Metalic conduit to the electrical box the plug is in, you can hook the grounding terminal on the recepticle to the box to get a grounded outlet
