It seems that Bond soundtracks are stuck in a no mans land, EMI feel their not profitable enough to give them a proper release, (in sequence and over 2 cd's where needed) and yet their too valuable to licence them out to specialist labels. What an absolute pain this is.
How is it that Jerry Goldsmith or John Williams get the red carpet treatment but Barry does not?

I've been listening to the Skyfall score a lot since it came out and I did the same with all the recent ones on their release, more so than any other albums. I get hooked on tracks like Casino Royale's African Rundown, and TND's 'Hamburg Breakout' and 'Backseat Driver' - brilliantly constructed.
There's a complete TND 2 CD set using the isolated score that's worth seeking out for even more music and a 45 track leaked promo of Die Another Day in great quality!

Like watching the films, I try not to listen to the classics too regularly, so when I do it can start to feel fresh again and not to familiar. I need to get round to creating a playlist of all my favourite cues, and it would be nice to just sit down in a room sometime instead of in the car, play from a decent sound system, kick back and close my eyes....

Great post! I agree on the car listening which is how I am also listening to them.I also just started sky fall on my drive home tonight.I need to put a few more of the bond soundtracks in the car. I ended up listening to all the theme songs as well. It's so frustrating that emi will not issue the scores. There has been some wonderful soundtrack reissues for Star Trek recently.I wish 007 could get the same treatment. Even if the releases were $26 or so I would gladly pay to have them.

On an 80s bond kick over the past week.A view to a kill has some great score cues that were left off the soundtrack!!! Bond escaping by horse, fight at Stacey's and the ride to the Golden Gate Bridge Passage to India from octopussy would be another one. There is a nice cue when bond is dropped at the east German border by m as well.Come on emi!!I believe there is a website that has a write up on the I expanded bond scores and what cues are missing.I'm trying to find it

Thanks for the link to the Barry interview.I always liked Rigg and Lazenby was okay. I like that movie more and more over time. Were they mismatched? Hard to say. My main feeling is I wondered how Connery would have been in the film had it been written pretty much as is and with Rigg.

It makes me wonder if Barry had ever revisited the films he worked on at later dates and whether his views may have softened or whether he is recalling memories from the actual time. For many of us that have seen the films countless times, if we didn't think much of it initially, more often than not our appreciation for them can grow.
My feeling is, being a busy and active composer, he did not have the opportunity, or was particularly interested in going back over them so we are left with his initial thoughts.

One other thing you guys aren't considering... the EMI that released those Bond cds ceased to exist well over a year ago.

Are the soundtracks going out of print then? I believe the 3 vinyl reissues were last summer??

Looking on wiki, they seemed to be in trouble from 2006 onwards and then broken up in 2012.
Looking at the inlay card for the 50th Anniversary CD, it says Capitol Records where previously it had always been EMI. From what I can gather UMG (Universal Media Group) seem to be new owners although Sony also took a publishing arm. With all the turmoil, this probably explains why it was a fairly standard release for the 50th now.

Yeah UMG ended up with the AMERICAN Capitol (IE: recordings made by Capitol/Liberty/Dalton/UA, not simply distributed by them), Virgin (with a few exceptions), Apple Records, and some (but not all) of the EMI Records catalog. They sold off Parlophone (again with a few exceptions, Queen's catalog recently transferred over to Island Records worldwide), most of Harvest (that includes Pink Floyd), Chrysalis, and HMV/Angel/EMI Classics to Warner.

Now I'm assuming that the bulk of the Bond scores EMI had are still with UMG since they're part of the Capitol Records catalog. However there are some exceptions like A View to A Kill (it was released on Parlophone in the UK IIRC) that may have changed hands.

I accidentally discovered 007.com last week and was surprised to see there are three albums released on HDtracks.com as high resolution, and Osato, you mentioned the vinyl albums from last year, which appear to be the same albums and tracks. I guess this is old news to you guys!

In looking at the track listing for Goldfinger on HDtracks.com there are only 10 tracks listed. So the extra tracks are not included and the Miami track is connected to the title track! If the whole of all the albums were there, that would have been nice.

Interesting! I did not know this. The pricing on the hd ones turned me off from trying one of them.

I'm currently reading John Burlingame's excellent book The Music of James Bond, and listening to a lot of the old scores. John Barry is indisputably a master, and the success of the movie series owes a lot to him. His work is easily on par with John Williams, Jerry Goldsmith, and even older greats like Bernard Hermann and Max Steiner.

He invented the genre of Spy music. I've read the book once, think i'll have to read it again- maybe the expanded edition with Skyfall included.
