It is it true?

All of these incredible wattage claims, when only a few years before, something like FIVE channels of 100 watts (100 WATTS????) was something like an integrated(!) pipe and a dream?

Is it really true? Could it be?

True or false.

be wary of receiver wattage claims.

be very wary...

100 wattsx5 into a 8 ohm resister isn't that big of a deal, but we know that speakers aren't 8 ohm impedence and can be all over the place impedence wise.

be very wary of receiver power ratings

I forgot to mention that the sensitivity will greatly influence decibel output also. For instance, a speaker with a sensitivity of 87 decibels @ one meter will put out the same volume with a 200 watt/channel power amp as a speaker rated at 93 decibels will with an amp rated at 50 watts/channel.

One point, under HT condition, it is never 100x5 situation. There is enough phase delay for the amp to recover and give power to the other chanels and in no point do any DSP or DTS program needs full power from all the chanels at the same time.
