I am hoping for a late year release rather than early Summer.

Since I have bought a new iPhone each year I want to be
eligible for the subsidized pricing rather than having to shell
out another $500 -- especially when I am about to buy an iPad.

From what is being reported, the iPhone will have the
CDMA chip but that doesn't mean they will be partnered
with Verizon....now.

What event will Apple use to announce the new iPhone?

Is there some sort of conference coming up or will Apple
just issue a press release?

Late year! Don't worry, they won't run out and you can still upgrade later in the year.

Even if it comes to Verizon, I'll still switch to AT&T. Not having simultaneous voice and data, on Verizon, seems like a big decrease in functionality to me.

Presumably it will be announced at WWDC, like past versions.

We're hearing that the "iPhone HD" will be released "before the fourth quarter". So ... probably late August. I fully agree that the announcement will come at the WWDC.

I'll add another bit of speculation on my part: the next iPhone will support 802.11n (since the iPad does).

Is that Apple's 4th quarter or calendar? Apple's third quarter ends in June. That sounds likelier to me than August.

Everything that I'm seeing is pointing to an announcement in June, with availability for late August/early September.
I wouldn't be surprised if it was related to quantity ramp-ups of the A4 chip which it shares with the iPad.

This is significant in one way: there was always speculation that Verizon might be balking on the iPhone for various reasons (branding/cost/network traffic/Apple control, etc.) This statement makes it clear they are open to it -- presumably it is now up to Apple to decide if a making a CDMA phone for Verizon (and possibly China Mobile) is worth it.

I seriously doubt we'll learn anything new on Thursday in this regard.

It feels like Apple has made 4.0 a very aggressive effort to address every real usability concern and reaffirm their dominance as the best, easiest to use, most full feature phone on the planet. My initial impression is this is their attempt at the headshot to Android phones.

Couple this with a a 5MP camera and 960x640 screen in the next phone.

And if they release it outside of AT&T

And who would buy any other phone?

That's the feel of the developing story.
