Hi all, just been shopping around for a HTIB for my bedroom (bout to make decision today) and came across the Insignia IS-HTIB102 http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1099393829210

I can see that it is a whopping 1,000W at under $200? Also including a subwoofer thats more powerful then the HT-P38 which I am strongly considering to buy http://www.circuitcity.com/rpsm/oid/...Detail.do#tabs

Can someone tell me why a superior 1000W HTIB is going for less then $200 while the Onyko 1000W goes for $400+? Is it because of the brand, durability, etc.? Replys would be greatly appreciated.

Jeff, neither of these units produces a genuine "1,000 watts." The power rating that counts is the one that is taken at 8 ohms, with all channels driven, across the entire audio bandwidth of 20 Hz to 20 kHz at a given level of distortion. Then there's the power rating at clipping (usually done with a single channel running during measurement).

Ignore the power hyperbole that's used when companies promote their HTiBs.

Jeff, this Onkyo looks good spec wise, if you can stretch the budget a bit; 100w x 5 @ THD .08% (1Khz)

The Samsung in your link also has 100w x5, but at 1Khz has 10% THD.

The Insignia is 135w x 6 @ 4 ohms, 10% THD; (output at 8 ohms is usually half that at 4 ohms)

Note that the specs are taken at 1Khz. Assuming that nobody watches anything at 1Khz continuously, the power output within the hearing range 20Hz to 20KHz will be much lower.

Take a look at this PDF brochure (it's quite a decent receiver, that Yamaha 1500) and lets see what they say

7 channels, 1190W (only 190W above the Insignia, apparently)

Further down:
Maximum Power 8Ohms, 1KHz 10%THD is 170W x 7

Next box:
Minimum power 8Ohms 20hz-20Khz 0.04% THD is 120W x 7
