Once in awhile I have the opportunity to see a non-mainstream film that most

people would have probably passed over theatrically.  When that film becomes

a revelation of sorts to me, I try to come here and urge fellow members to consider

a blind Blu-ray purchase.

There are two main problems with the film I am about to recommend to all of you,

Blue is the Warmest Color.

The first problem is the subject matter of the film.  I have no problem admitting that

I was attracted by the film's trailer (which I will include below) and the fact that it's

the kind of film that would probably appeal to many men (and some women).

So, yes, I intended to watch this film for the wrong reasons.

The film is rated NC-17, and is quite graphic in its depiction of lesbian sex.

However, the story and the performances by its two main actresses are intriguing.

Though the film runs 3 hours in length, it never felt that long.

For those that aren't prudish, nor turned off by the subject matter, this is probably

going to be one of the best films you have seen in the past few months.

That's the angle I am hoping to sell this film on.  I think it is one of those movies

that will slip under most viewer's radar, but yet, is very worthy of attention.

Now here is the second problem....

Criterion is selling the Blu-ray for $19.95.  That's fantastic.  However, they have

apparently promised that a deluxe version will be released at a later date.  I think

most people that enjoy this film as much as I did, will want the deluxe version.

That being said, not the worst idea in the world to gamble $20 on this Blu-ray.

Be aware this is a French film with subtitles.

Watch the trailer below.  Read some online reviews.  I think you will be compelled

to watch.

The link below will take you directly to the product on Amazon.  If you are using an adblocker you will not see link.

Glad to see you liked it, Ron. I haven't seen it, but I heard the buzz about it and was delighted to hear Criterion is releasing it, though their release model (with a deluxe version later) for this film puzzles me.

Sounds good, and I appreciate the recommendation. I'll wait for the full Criterion release, though.

Yeah, I'm not sure if I'll get the bare bones Blu or wait for the stacked dual format. I guess I'll see what my whim is that day

I got a few you can try Ron.

Some, even though they are also NC-17, Will make this look like a Saturday Morning PSA in Germany.
That's funny.

Usually, I am not attracted to NC-17 films just for the sake of nudity.

If I wanted to watch something graphic, there's porn on the Internet. :D

...and I'm trying to figure out where I first heard of Blue is the Warmest Color.

...but the cute girls and the subject matter definitely sparked an interest, but by the
time the film was done, I was more enamored with the story, which still resides
in my mind as I type this.

I think I am going to wait for the Deluxe Criterion treatment.

Speaking of what I brought up at "the other BitWC thread"...

Have "we" ever considered trying to get UK/De/Fr editions of movies to see how often movies really are "sanitized for US consumption"?

Like said over "there"...9 Songs and Immortal Beloved(which the video crops in this movie are utterly stupid).

What would it take to have a reviewer get a US and Euro edition?

Schan,

If you are confident about a particular title, let me know, and perhaps we'll get
an interested reviewer (or member who wants to review) copies to compare.

What distributor, in particular, is doing this?

As I noted in the other thread, I highly doubt Criterion is the culprit. They are
very careful in the way they preserve their product.

To sort out a bit here Ron...

Short Bus. Even once you remove(well, get past) the sex scenes(which the one isn't even as graphic as anything in Q)...the story is worth the travel. And yes...the movie is notorious, cause apparently...the one couple really does have sex(which really happens in Brief Traverse and supposedly happens in Don't Look Now).

9 Songs. Well...anybody who has had a fleeting year long entanglement with a female college student enjoying herself...immensely...well...

Ken Park. You can't even get this in the US. The version I have is a Russian import. Total indictment of lousy parenting. Get past the actual sex...and it is a harrowingly sad story.

Brief Traverse. Breillat. What else do you need to know?

Angels of Sex. Yes this movie has "content issues"(mainly for the actual gay crowd). But it is a quick and easy movie to see why 1+1+1 is sometimes the relationship people need.

I believe that the director has said that he is preparing a longer version for home video and that may be why Criterion is releasing the theatrical cut now, in a cheaper bare bones edition.

I still plan on picking up the future release.

I'd offer to review explicit, low brow, Grindhouse, "Something Weird" type stuff (which this film isn't of course) but I doubt my rig at home is considered good enough. Reason being, Distribpix is starting to treat their porn catalog like Criterion treats their films, and their bluray releases of "Opening of Misty Beethoven" and "Barbara Broadcast" could have you re-evalutate porn movies in general. "Porn Chic" ones anyways. I'm yet to see them mentioned on this site, but "Sight and Sound" magazine have given both pretty good reviews. They're partnering up with "Vinegar Syndrome" this year (Robert Harris gave their "The Telephone Book" a glowing review last year) so 2014 should be a pretty interesting year in the niche film front.

I'm presuming I'm not the only interested in trashy/explicit type cinema. ;)

Re "Misty Beethoven" -- I see one (1) used copy available through Amazon priced at $299. WTF is that all about?

No idea, looking at their site they are running low on the bluray and wont be shipping until January 30th or so. I ordered it direct, I'd check out there next week, or shoot them an email.

A lot of the third-party seller prices on Amazon are set by bots and can get weird. There was an article about this a couple of years ago -- some obscure textbook managed to get two bots into some sort of loop and the price shot up to eight figures.

Ah, Google is my friend!

Amazon seller lists book at $23,698,655.93 -- plus shipping

Well, how much longer will the Director's Cut be? The theatrical version is already nearly 3 hours long. If the deluxe edition that's coming out later is just extras then I can live with the barebones version. This will be a blind buy anyway - if I enjoy the film and there's a 5-hour version down the road I'm willing to double dip.

This is one Criterion Collection Blu-ray Disc title I am looking to bring home for my birthday, along with It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World, Nashville and Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion, amongst others.

I don't mind 40 extra minutes worth of footage.

I think there was a certain part of the storyline I would have liked to
have seen fleshed out, though it probably won't be....

Emma's parents are very accepting of her lifestyle. Adèle had to hide it from hers. Would have loved to see that story expanded where her parents finally learn that she is a lesbian.

With Blockbuster gone now, hopefully studios won't be so afraid to release NC-17 movies in the future.
