How to control a receiver with a laptop (1 Viewer)

I am starting to do research on home theater systems. One ability that I would like to have is to control my home theater receiver using my laptop. Does that mean I need a Home Theatre Personal Computer. I don't really care about using my TV as my computer I want the ability to sit on the couch and increase the volume, change the song, fast forward all through a wireless connection on my laptop. What do I need to accomplish this?

I believe that Harmony makes a number of remotes that are able to control windows and Mac PC. You may want to investigate further
