Hi, I recently got a Samsung bluray player and want to connect it to my home theater system. The problem is the bluray player only has hdmi out and my receiver (Sony) doesnt have hdmi inputs or outputs. Currently I run the hdmi to the tv and then a coax cable from the coax out on my tv to my receiver. The problem with this is I'm not getting 5.1 surround sound which my receiver supports. I have the digital out on my TV set to raw but I'm assuming the tv is desampling the audio to 2 channel audio. Is there some way that I can 5.1 Dolby to my receiver. I found a box that is basically an hdmi splitter and supports 5.1 output via coax but reading reviews it doesn't seem to be of the best quality (I'll put the link below). If anyone has any ideas of how to go about this or knows of any other boxes/converters that would work please let me know. I really don't want to spend more than $50... Thank in advance for your help! http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=101&cp_id=10110&cs_id=1011002&p_id=5557&seq=1&format=4#feedback

Schan1269, Thanks for your reply. Actually it was a Christmas gift. It's a Samsung bd-e5400.

Oh yes...I forgot Samsung(I pay no attention to them) removed "everything" from their BD players. Yep, with that one your only choice is a HDMI switch. Just make sure the one you choose doesn't dumb down the toslink to 2.0. The one from MonoPrice will say in its owners manual. The "bullet points" don't say either way. And, just because it "supports" all those sounds modes...doesn't mean it releases them via the toslink/digital coax.

You "might be" able to return(???) that one for a 5500. Or sell the 5400 and buy the 5500. It would probably be more cost effective to return/sell and buy the other one.

With a quick "check of Ebay"... It looks like you can buy and sell your current BD player for the 5500 as pretty much an "even swap".

Look at this one. http://www.ebay.com/itm/SAMSUNG-BD-C5500-BLU-RAY-DISC-PLAYER-Includes-Remote-and-HDMI-Cable-/150954003190?pt=DVD_Players_Recorders&hash=item23258f4af6 Shipping is included, when you get it re-pack yours in the box this one came in...and list it starting at $20. Then, no matter what you sell it for...you are still ahead over buying the HDMI switch. And that C5500 is "better" than the current E5400.(although there might be an app it doesn't have???)

That is what we are here for. And yes, I know sometimes a "gift" is held in "uber regard" depending on whom gave it to you... But, most people will understand switching a gift for something else(as long as you kept the original intent of said gift) that works better for you.
