Brent, while LA is certainly a harder place to live, it can be done. Some good advice given by the locals (and don't let Jack scare you too much). I'm from Minneapolis myself, and have had several friends from the Twin Cities move out to LA/San Diego and the Bay area. All of them were able to live their lives out there without great difficulty. If you're dedicated and understand the challenges which have all been laid out in this thread you'll be fine.

Jack - I have been there during a few Santa Ana winds and I truly don't recall them being too bad. Sure, there were a few nights here and there where the wind was blowing pretty hard, but nothing from what I'm used to in Wisconsin. Before I moved out there I read a bunch of books about L.A. and SoCal, and they described those winds as being pretty bad. I honestly can barely tell when they're around!
