I do that too, but I like to melt it all with the hand sprayer and hot water.

Glass doesn't hurt a garbage disposal much if it's industrial (we did this intentionally in the grocery business in the produce area, the glass helped and was actually recommended in the instruction manual.

I agree with the soap, warm water, and high volume of water crowd. The one I use at home I plug the sink, put about tablespoon of soap, fill it about 3/4 full of hot water, unplug the stopper and turn on the disposal while running the hot water for about a minute.
