Max, how did you like The Reptile? I'm a big Hammer fan (watched Frankenstein Created Woman yesterday), never saw this one and just saw it for sale!

Max, this is a great thread.
I was wondering if you could tell me if a movie called SUPERSTITION is out on DVD
It's a great little horror movie that I remembered from the early 80's.
Anyway, it has a few great gore scenes like someone getting cut in half from leaning out a window, a head exploding in a microwave, and a man is killed by a circular sawblade that jumps off the machine and goes right into his chest.
If it is not out on DVD, it bloody well should be!

Barry,
i have not gotten to The Reptile yet and am not likely to until near the end of the Week.
Bob,
I don't think that one is out yet. I did some looking over horror DVD lists and do not remember seeing that one yet.
Now onto the latest...
Nightwatch
Of this is a Danish flick and the back of the box says there was an US remake of it which I never heard of.
The DVD is in Danish 5.1 with english subtitles.
I don't think this one really falls into the Horror/Gore catagory but is more of a suspense/horror.
It was actually a damn good movie with a very mood setting soundtrack. I found the subs pretty easy to follow.
Basic Idea... Law Student gets a job as a night Watchman in the morgue area of a Hosipital at a time while several local hookers are being murdered by a loony. They try to keep you guessing about who the bad guy really is.
While not gore/horror this is a good movie and is worth seeing if you can rent it, not sure you would want to buy though.
There is some gore but not excessively.

I am really impressed that you found a Toyko Shock title (one that I haven't heard of even) at a store. And that you got The Reptile for $5! You obviously know how to shop.

Excellent point. The thing is, I can only think of a thimble full of films that really set the mood for me. The Omen, Halloween, Friday the 13th, and Suspiria (I disliked the vocal, but enjoyed the music).
It is true that images from Suspiria linger. I still "see" that opening sequence, which I enjoyed. But I am still puzzled by Susy Banyon's smile as she dashes out of the dormitory at the end of the film. (I saw it on VHS.) I don't know if that was intentional, but it gave the movie an odd finish.
To tell you the truth, I kind of liked it. It made it seem as though the entire movie was a dream, in some ways a _pleasant_ dream! I haven't collected all of my thoughts on it yet, (hich is why none of this makes sense), but I regret saying that "I didn't get it" in an earlier post. It really DOES take hold of you after awhile!
PS: AVOID the VHS tape! The bottom of the scene with the blind guy and the dog is cutoff! You only see the top of the dog's ears, but no gore! Ugh, I went nuts when I saw that!

Lannie,
I got them at Suncoast. They are apparently blowing out a bunch of the old Hammer and Anchor Bay DVDs for $4.99 each.
I got a couple of other Hammer Movies that were $4.99 as well but did not really fit the thread.
Ivan,
Near as I can tell Cannibal Haulocaust does not really exist. :) Just kidding. I don't think it has been released in the US yet but I thought that it was out in Europe on DVD. In fact I was seriously considering one of those new prog scan multi-region players that do pal->ntsc conversion just to open up my options on non-US releases.
Sam,
You go collect your thoughts and get back to us later.

Have you gotten into any of the Fulci stuff yet on DVD? Or Bava?
I really find that most people just do not get into Argento's movies as easily as they do those directors. Once they like those directors and start looking for more the will move to Argento and enjoy it more easily. I could be wrong but that is how I see it.

Well Last night I checked out ...
Zombie Lake
Well I picked this one out because the cover claimed "The Most Terrifiying Zombie Massacre Ever to Come To The Screen". More on that later. :)
The movie is part of Image Entertainment's Euroshock Collection. It is a french movie and it really shows. I think I may have seen this one way way way back in the early 80's.
Ok so I pop in the DVD and my first impressions are that I am watching some sort of Forigen softcore porno movie. There is a beautiful girl running around a beautiful lake and she tosses her clothes of and goes for a dip. You will quickly know this is not an American movie becauses as she swims about they feature underwater photography and actually show her spread a few times if you know what I mean. Not something that we get here in US Films.
Oh Wait I am supposed to be discussing a Horror movie, a fairly disappointing looking Zombie swims up in the water and in a very not gorey way pulls her down with him and then we are in the next scene. A little Later on in the movie there is a bloodfilled scene of a Zombie biting a womans neck but unfortunately they dwell on the womans neck durring the bite and it is clear that no damage is being done they just added movie blood. In fact it actually looks more like a guy sucking and kissing a womans neck then a zombie bite. If It wasn't for the blood I would have thought that this was a love scene. :)
Quick run down on the story....
In a little French town there is a lake that has some Zombies wearing german WWII uniforms and a story to explain that. As far as story goes this one is as good as any other at giving a reason for why the dead should return to life and eat the living. :)
So then what is the Problem...
Lets get back to the cover line "The Most Terrifiying Zombie Massacre Ever to Come To The Screen", It falls very short of being even close to true. There is little in the way of gore or terror. When they do show some blood and stuff it is not very real looking and often so bad it is comic. Do not see this movie expecting it to be like Dawn of the Dead or Zombie because it ain't. Though if you do like watching French girls cavort in the nude well then you might enjoy this one. In Fact there is a scene of a 1/2 dozen French girls all swimming and playing in the buff together. I think it is funny that the French tried to make a Gore film and end up with some late night skinamax softcore thing instead.
Looking for Horror, I would Pass!!!

Looking for naked French Girls well then might be worth renting.
I would give it a

Sam D.,
Got tired of searching local, picked up Mario Bava's Black Sunday DVD on Ebay (Widescreen European version. Hope to have it soon. Also ran across his Blood and Black Lace DVD in Suncoast and Sam Goody (same store...). Didn't pick it up at the time because I'd never heard of it

Is there someone living in the Orlando Florida area who would be willing to stop Max Yokel before he buys again? And again. And again... ;-)
That part of the country is reeling from the Florida DVD Massacre. Perhaps we could set up an Evil Dead Trap at his mall on a rotating daywatch and Nightwatch to stop this Maniac American Psycho and his Ravenous need to purchase new films From Dusk Till Dawn.
And if we can't halt this Macabre Madman at the Chopping Mall, perhaps we can sneak up on him at his Grandmother's House and slip him A Blade in the Dark while holding him down on Terror Firmer with our Idle Hands.
I know some would rather not use deadly force and just render him Dead Alive with a little Brain Damage, turning him into a Basket Case. I disagree. I Don't Torture A Duckling. I'd rather check him into The House by the Cemetery in tiny Pieces than mollycoddle The Reptile by aiming for The Johnsons and cutting off his Organ.

Magnus,
While that head poping scene is cool there is nothing like watching a Troma movie and being able to tell that the head being squashed his a melon. :)
Bob,
You send them all to Orlando looking for me. I only had to drive there for that one day. I live in the Tampa area so while they are searching for me I will still be shopping on the west coast of Fla for all the latest and greatest in Gore. :)
Last night I tried to watch Mechanical Violator Hakaider and just could not stay awake for it. I am blaming having spent all day Sunday out on a the boat fishing in the hot Fla Sun. It can really beat the crap out of you.
So I will try again tonight.

Ah, my daily Max Y. Thread fix.
laugh.gif

K, this is the list of titles that I am currently considering. I'd prefer to rent first, but my local Blockbuster does not carry *any* of them.
frown.gif

Gonna have to fork over the cash.
Lucio Fulci
-----------
Don't Tortue a Duckling. (1972)
The New York Ripper. (1982)
The Beyond. (1982)
La Gabbia, aka Collector's Item. (1985) Not in print.
A Cat In The Brain. (1990)
Mario Bava
----------
Black Sunday. (1960)
Blood and Black Lace. (1964)
Bay of Blood. (1971)
Dario Argento
-------------
Phenomena. (1984) -- I'm a Jennifer Connelly fan.
(Holding off on more, because I'm not sure if Argento is "up my alley.")
I'm a little wishy-washy when it comes to buying DVDs "unseen." The All Movie Guide (AMG) seems to have its finger on the consensus pulse, so I've relied heavily (too heavily?) on it. I figure it can't be too wide of the mark.

Sam,
Your list with some notes and Addtions. :)
Lucio Fulci
-----------
Don't Tortue a Duckling. (1972)
Don't buy it yet. Wait till you have some other Fulci and like it
The New York Ripper. (1982)
The Beyond. (1982)
Get them both are coold and Anchor Bay LE tin of The Beyond is way cool.
La Gabbia, aka Collector's Item. (1985) Not in print.
Not sure what this one is when converted to english?
A Cat In The Brain. (1990)
Less gorey but an interesting story. His last movie I believe.
You might want to consider City of the Living Dead, Zombie, and Let Sleeping Corpses Lie.
Mario Bava
----------
Black Sunday. (1960)
Blood and Black Lace. (1964)
Bay of Blood. (1971)
All of those are good but if you happen to run across Rabid Dogs you might want to grab that one as it is OOP.
Dario Argento
-------------
Phenomena. (1984) -- I'm a Jennifer Connelly fan.
(Holding off on more, because I'm not sure if Argento is "up my alley.")
That would be good. Steer Vlear of Phantom of the Opera and Stengal Syndromre for the time being.

Well, here's the revised list based on the material on this thread and others...
BEYOND, THE
NEW YORK RIPPER, THE
FRANKENSTEIN CREATED WOMEN
I've decided to keep it to these, 'cause it's already $100!
Here's my thinking. I wanted to introduce myself to Hammer Studios product (as mentioned in a few threads), and "Frankenstein Created Women" seemed to be the most highly regarded. It doesn't have a lot of gore though, so I may be disappointed. I'm going to pick it up today at Best Buy.
Still, I'm pretty pumped for The Beyond and Ripper, due to the enthusiasm expressed here. It sucks that I have to mail order them. They're not available in my area.
Anyway, thanks for the tips Julie and Max. I'll let you know how it goes!

Sam,
Most Hammer films I've seen are more about atmosphere and story rather than gore, but with stars like Peter Cushing and Cristopher Lee that's just fine. Cushing is in a lot of the Frankenstein movies, Lee in Dracula but they appear in several together. Recently picked up Frankenstein Created Woman and Rasputin the Mad Monk on VHS
frown.gif
but at .99 each, brand new widescreen in collectors cases I'm not complaining much.
