Can we include biopics, like Gandhi, Amadeus, etc?

How historical does it have to be? Is the Vietnam War too recent, for example?

    More questions:

Would fictional movies about historical eras be acceptable (for example, most of Kurosawa's work)?

What about movies like Casablanca, which are historical NOW, but weren't at the time?

Never mind my questions (although others might want to know)... even under the most lenient of definitions, I'd have a hard time filling a list of 10. Just not my cup of tea, I suppose.

    Okay, we're good to go.

Jan, sorry! I thought about going to 16, but I really think that would be pushing it.

    To answer Chuck's questions:

Biopics are fine, as are fictional films that are centered on historical events (Black Robe for instance). Use your own judgement. Personally, I wouldn't call Casablanca a "history" film - it's more about the romance, really, as is The English Patient, a favorite of mine. Anyway, this should make for some interesting discussions. [IMG]

I'm up and here's my first pick:

"Tell me, Professor, can you recall a story from antiquity where two men who are the best of friends, almost brothers, by a trick of fate find themselves on opposing sides in a great war, and then on a given day find themselves facing each other on the same battlefield?"

"We are prepared for a few deaths. But we are never prepared for so many."

"What a piece of work is man, in action how like an angel, in apprehension how like a god." "Well, man may be an angel. But he damn well must be a killer angel."

"General, you must look to your division."
    "General Lee....I have no division."

Amon Goethe: Today is history. Today will be remembered. Years from now the young will ask with wonder about this day. Today is history and you are part of it. Six hundred years ago when elsewhere they were footing the blame for the Black Death, Kazimerz the Great, so called, told the Jews they could come to Krakow. They came. They trundled their belongings into the city. They settled. They took hold. They prospered in business, science, education, the arts. With nothing they came and with nothing they flourished. For six centuries there has been a Jewish Krakow. By this evening those six centuries will be a rumor. They never happened. Today is history.
