Current drives speakers but how do you get a higher current into a fixed impedance speaker without a higher voltage?
Speakers pull current from a receiver...you can't 'push' current to them. It has to be available to meet the demands of the speaker. Otherwise, it just won't be able to produce the sound it's supposed to at a given volume (voltage) and frequency. Turn up an inexpensive receiver attached to a 'demanding' pair of speakers and you'll find the sound quality will deteriorate and the soundstage will begin collapsing the louder you go. This is because the speakers are trying to pull more current that the amp can provide.

After the big Eastern seaboard blackout, it was interesting to hear these same theories applied to the power grid! Current produced must meet the current demand - no more, no less.
