I hope this can continue. There are some more strong titles appearing on the HD DVD format this spring (The Matrix Trilogy) & later this year as well as some strong titles for Blu-ray too. (Pirates of the Caribbean).

Truly, I hope BOTH can sustain strong sales throughout the remainder of this year so the HD discs become a part of our everyday language, not just internet sites. :)

Well, we are already seeing the HD DVD numbers slide since sunday and it will continue. The problem is that by all those supporters waiting to buy on that day, now they have spent their wad on those titles. The success of blu ray is a sustained success. I still bet casino royale will have more total sales than panet earth. I think this spike shows how little amazon reflects what is being sold outside in the b and m stores.

Psychologically, these types of "buying events" and/or "Blu-Ray Sale on Amazon" have the effect of making people feel good about their chosen format. This lifts sales not only in the short term, but also lifts the bar a bit longer term.

I assure you that right now, any HD optical sales are "good news" considering the paltry numbers to date.

Regards,
Dan

Sunday was an artificial peak, but HD DVD apparently outsold BR on amazon (for whatever that's worth) Monday and Tuesday, as well, so its supporters apparently are still spending their wad. HD DVD has been trending up since the wave of new releases began, which is not surprising.

This reminds me of the one time fans on the net organized a day to go and see again The Phantom Menace back in 1999 to boost its numbers. Needless to say that it didn't work! :D

I think it just shows....."if you build release it, they will come buy." :D

Hey, we all spin, but this trend was showing a bit before the big day Sunday. We can't ignore the great sales for Casino Royale for Blu-ray and at the same time, let's not discount the strong sales for Planet Earth and the new record on Amazon.

So, do you tell a virgin when they get married, "hey, enjoy it while you can?" ;)

In 1999 Prodigy and AOL charged $19/hr for the internet. the 5 Americans who could afford the 'net couldn't possibly buy that many tickets.

:) yes Tim enjoy it while you can :)

CR has much much stronger competition compare to Planet Earth, but yes result is nice because PE is much more expansive pack.....

The SD version is outselling them both. ;)

What'll 'truly' help one format to become a sustainable success is the sale of 'hardware' -- not software.

Those are the numbers that fans of either format should be watching.

Sales figures for software will peak and ebb as different titles are released -- especially when a title is "exclusive" to one particular format.

I will invest in a format when players go below $200. Whoever is first to that price point will gain a considerable amount of market share in a short amount of time.

shouldn't the title read: hd dvd sales staging comeback on amazon? not sure that site is representative of the market as a whole, though we'll know for sure once the videoscan numbers come out.

you won't regret the decision, it's a fantastic show, and it's gonna be a spectacular way to show off your hd system when friends come round.

But isn't it the top-grossing Star Wars film? I think it grossed the most of the prequels anyway.

They didn't beat Spider-Man if that's what you were referring to. Of course there'd never been a Spider-Man movie before, and there had already been 2.5 great Star Wars films.:)

So I take it this title was chosen for the big HD-DVD buy day since it's about the most expensive thing available?

I bet it makes great demo material, but I resisted pre-ordering it on BD during the WB sale. I'm going to Netflix it. Just can't see myself sitting down to watch it that many times, but once in a blue moon maybe. I used to love watching things like this when I was a little kid and had some on tape I watched repeatedly.
