It's purely objective, but Peter Jackson said the Lord of the Rings films were basically "made for DVD." This is reflected in the superb documentaries contained on each Extended Edition. Make no mistake... the LOTR EE's are DVD at their best... but as with any huge movie made now, there is not really an excuse NOT to have a DVD like that.
You could say the EE's are "better" than the new GWTW set, but the fact of the matter is...
This is a DVD set with the most successful film of all time, one of the greatest (it's in my top 10), one of the most influential, one of the most Oscar winning, etc. The restoration is perfect. The set contains a feature-length documentary on the film, as well as 3 shorter ones on the 3 leads, as well as nearly 30 minutes combined for all the other supporting actors. To be perfectly honest, I think most people would have been more than satisfied to have a 2-disc edition of the film, with just the '88 making-of and a trailer or two. Warner added over 3 hours of content just on the acting talent and a handful of vintage shorts and other bits.
The fact that we have a 1939 film with a stunning 4-disc SE makes it more special.
