I was wondering if they would also put it on The Gomer set. I was not a big enough fan of Andy to buy it. Its nice to watch once in a while but I never got hooked on it.

I thought maybe they would put it on there.

Universal did that with KNight Rider. They put an ep from Season 4 on the Season 3 set as a bounus material

Great news! This is a show that I've been looking forward to adding to my collection for a while now. First season was in B&W. I think it ran 5 seasons.

This is a CLASSIC!!

Fantastic news! I've been waiting for word on this release for a couple of years now--and it arrives in time for Christmas. This is my favorite comedy series of all.

"Gomer Pyle, USMC" is the rare show that actually improves with each season, as Gomer and Sgt. Carter get increasingly involved in civilian based stories. IMO it was Frank Sutton who really made this show the classic it became, in as much as Don Knotts was responsible for much of the success of TAGS.

Some of my favorite shows off the top of my head: Carter's bets with Sgt. Hacker, the Welsh Rarebit, Gomer on manuevers by way of Navy escort, Carter believing Pyle is terminally ill due to mix-up with a farmer's horse, Carter visiting his Mother to maintain his sanity, losing the Colonel's German Shepard, Carter's prized car entrusted to Gomer, losing the Colonel's nephew's pet rabbit, Friendly Freddy, the Chinese restaurant as a gambling front...there are so many classic segments!

3 of my faves are from Season 1

The one where Gomer finds a skunk and Carter allows him to keep it warning him that if he gets caught with it, Carter will hang him out to dry. As it turns out, Gomer wins Carter praise from the Colonel when he lets the skunk rome in Sgt Whipple's Barracks and gets him and his platoon in the colonel's dog house

Another one in which Gomer tries to cheer up Joey Loumbardi by sneaking his girlfriend on the base and the platoon and Carter help Gomer sneak her out by lining up and Marching to the gate

And the one where they all graduate from bootcamp. Carter thinks he is rid of Gomer and transfers to get him outta his hair. Only to discover that instead of going to Parris Island, Gomer and the gang will join him at Camp Henderson in California

I like the show but not as much as Andy Griffith. Many years ago I taped all of the eps w/Andy Griffith characters or cast members appearing on Gomer.

I'm still on the fence about purchasing the sets. Time will tell.

Anyone else pick this up? Seems to be a really nice set. But, as in the case of last week's "Mission: Impossible" set, I had a hard time finding a copy. It often makes me wonder if the vicinity I reside in is at the tail-end of dvd distribution patterns. Yesterday, on its day of release, I couldn't find a single copy of "Gomer" at my Best Buy or Circuit City, but then found one at Suncoast, where they told me they received only ONE single copy (which is the copy I purchased). Anyway, this really seems to be a dandy set, with nice intros by Nabors, and a number of fun extras. Paramount seems to keep adding to its track-record of quality sets.

I got mine yesterday too, Bert. It's a wonderful set and Paramount definitely is at the top of my favorite studios. They are doing a great job releasing TV classics.

Gary "Jim Nabors voice still sounds great in those little intros to the episodes" O.

I anxiously await my copy that I ordered from Amazon. In the extras, is there any sort of tribute to Frank Sutton by chance? How do the transfers hold up on this release?

I had the chance over the weekend to view a half dozen episodes and they are more enjoyable than ever! Kudos to Paramount for releasing a great set that's nicely remastered and loaded with extras. I can think of no other studio better prepared to release the remaining four seasons in a timely manner and look forward to getting the entire series.

I described the 3 Marine/Navy 'manuevers' episodes from S2 to my 6 year old and had him rolling on the floor (think Gomer and the 3 raft launchings).

that's great! I'm hoping my mom comes through. This was on my xmas list I gave her. I'd love to see these again.

Only 5 season? I didn't know that for some reason. At least this will be easy to collect. It's a shame they can't release the whole show in one pop so we don't have to wait between seasons.

The platoon of Marine recruits (they're real), seen marching in the show's intro went through bootcamp at San Diego in mid-1964.

to john wells , marc so and all:

I just received my order from amazon of gomer pyle, and as you were saying it isn't listed as having the pilot, but guess what!!, it actually does have it!! really surprised the heck out of me, once you open the first disc it will be on the extras listed. I even watched it to make sure but it's there in it's entire showing. I have all the andy griffith shows and was hoping it would come out right after season 4 ended, but then I finally learned it would be a few months later I was ok about it. just wish universal studios would start treating us like real people and talk to us about other shows like litb instead of treating us like we are not smart enough to hear a reason or any thing else regarding no word of litb, anyway kudos to paramount and cbs video.

Yeah and I was looking at the IMDB the other day and it is noted there that Jim Nabors has a hard time watching the opening credits to the show because many of those young men were killed in Vietnam

I sure love that episode where Sgt. Carter gets some wires crossed and thinks Gomer is dying. It's the one first-season episode I always seem to remember, and I've probably seen it a half-dozen times over the years, but it never fails to make me laugh. Simple 'misunderstanding' type script, but so beautifully done. Anyway, like I mentioned in an earlier post, this is a terrific set. The Nabors intros are nice and inviting, and I'm also glad to see the extra from "The Jim Nabors Hour" variety show.
