Wow. $45 for the set?

For 3 films, one would hope that Warner will come
in around that price or below when domestic preorder
becomes available. I could deal with $45 rather than
the exorbitant pricetag that often comes with these
Ultimate Collector's Editions.

(In other words, no box-o-junk please)

Something in my gut tells me this is going to be a pricey set.
I hate to admit, I have never seen a James Dean film. He never really appealed to me. Have all these films on DVD, but remarkably, I never opened a single one over the years. I am wondering which films are worth buying (GIANT obviously), and if there will be a worth in purchasing the entire UCE.
Will have to wait for a price announcement.

Charles,

Looks like 3 films in single Digibooks and a Ultimate Collector's Edition as pictured above.

The extra discs seem to be supplemental material.

To date, we only have preorder information on GIANT and EAST OF EDEN.

I would expect the other preorders will be posted later today or tomorrow.

I've seen them all, going back to a box set on laserdisc and beyond. Giant never has looked good on home video, I hope there was some cleanup done for the blu-ray. It's a big, sprawling soap opera with Dean playing a secondary but important role--the leads are Rock Hudson and Elizabeth Taylor. It's known primarily as a James Dean movie because it was his last performance. I remember seeing Rebel Without A Cause on 16mm in grade school. It passed over the heads of the gathered eighth graders. And East of Eden has some memorable widescreen photography.

It's a worthy set of movies to buy, but I don't know about the collector's box--unless they pull something shady by offering one of the movies as an exclusive to the big expensive box set...

The Warnercolor opticals are especially problematic on GIANT, even worse than DIAL M.

Bob,

You were with us when we visited MPI last October.

Did you also have the opportunity to see the footage from
the restored GIANT?What did you think?

I may see what the price of the three individual Blu-rays are and compare it to the price of the box set. I already have the George Stevens Doc on DVD and that is the only one of the three extra documentaries that I find attractive.

All three films are classics and well worth owning (and worthy of multiple views). I'm very attracted to that $45 price tag for the French set. Wow!

Matt,

Agreed. I don't think that set is going to retail for $45 here.

Most of those UCE sets end up in the $70 range, and that is
just for a single film with box-o-junk.

I'll buy the French version, but I want to see what the packaging
looks like first. It may be a turnoff having the title in French across
the front.

I will be very curious to see what it looks like - Giant is almost one long optical - there are so many endless opticals in this film, maybe more than any other ever made in terms of length of dissolves on the A & B side.
