So I got screwed by ordering late last night. Granted, I don't have a great desire to have anymore of the limited selection they offer. I still feel cheated though.

Unbelievable. I emailed them, but I doubt they'll be very helpful. I should cancel the goddamn order and place a new one. I would if everything hadn't already shipped today. Leave it to them to ship fast the one time I'd want it to take the 3-5 extra days for free shipping.

I've had some interesting back-and-forth with Amazon customer service over this deal. I ordered my player with 10 free HD-DVD's on December 4th for $232, and it shipped the same day and reached me the next day! (The three free discs I chose still haven't shipped, though). Even at the time I ordered and the price was listed at $232, the promotional offer was for some reason still worded as being 10 free discs and the player for $199. I went ahead and ordered at $232 and then e-mailed and told them I should get it for $199 because that's what the promo offer was advertised as on the product's page.

The response I got was strange. They told me that they couldn't deal with the issue and told me to contact Toshiba's Rebate Center! I e-mailed back and explained to them that I doubted that Toshiba would have any reason to address a pricing issue that Amazon had! I told them the only part of the offer that I would go to Toshiba for would be the five mail-in discs. This was an issue with Amazon's price listing for the promo offer. After they turned me down again after I explained the situation, I decided to hold back on any more haggling, as I suspected the price might be dropped to $199 within 30 days anyway, so I could easily get the lower price through the Post-Order Price Guarantee.

Anyway, the price has been dropped twice, and since Amazon has the less-publicized 30-day Post-Order Price Guarantee, I easily got two refunds for a total of $32.10.

I just e-mailed them again and told them that the 10-disc offer had changed to 12 discs, and asked to be given the two extra discs. They said no. They said plainly that the 12 disc offer wasn't there when I ordered, so I don't qualify for it. They then reprinted a bunch of Amazon's promotional offer guidelines, none of which applied to my order. I don't think there is anything in their guidelines that would mean they *have* to give me those two extra discs, as a better free disc offer is not really a "price drop", so it wouldn't fall under the Post-Order Price Guarantee. When I asked (very nicely of course!) for the two extra discs, I noted that I had heard that others had asked for and received them. Oh well.

I'm thinking of e-mailing back again to explain that none of the promotional offer guidelines they cited have anything to do with my order, but as somebody else alluded to, the small selection of their free discs isn't to my liking particularly (I had trouble even picking three that I wanted), so I don't know if it's worth so much back-and-forth with customer service to get two more free HD-DVD's that I may not even watch. But free discs are free discs. Does anybody have any other ideas of any other angle I can take in asking for the additional free discs? I somehow doubt I'm going to change their mind at this point. I wonder if simply getting a different person reading my e-mail makes any difference. It seems like on something like the two extra free discs that don't fall under any technical guidelines like a price drop, it would just come down to the discretion of each individual customer service person. I wonder if it's worth simply e-mailing again and reiterating my position.

Interesting that the 12 free disc offer is now back to 10 free discs, and even that offer is not currently listed on the actual product page (at least for the player I bought). It seems they sometimes keep the 10 (or 12) disc offer going, but don't list it on the product pages and only list it on the main HD-DVD page.

By the way, does anybody think they will lower the price on the players (I ordered the HD-A3) below the $199 the HD-A3 is currently at? I'm wondering if I should keep checking the product page for the next 26 days!

Well, they gave me the $25 refund but not the 2 extra movies. Just as well. Their selection of free titles was really lacking anyway. At least I got enough money back to pre-order Timecop (HD). :)

Maybe it's just coincidence, but I've noticed lately that when the price of something is going to drop, price yo-yoing like several items lately, amazon marks your order as shipped (so you can't change it or reorder at the lower price) incredibly quickly. Yet items whose price is heading up, the items also in stock, didn't get marked as "shipped" until days later.

Coincidence, or shrewd business? I don't begrudge them a few extra bucks on a good deal, would rather have them around than not, and from most reports they're not making massive profits.

For a few days in the Fall, Amazon listed the new Sony boxed set of 60 CDs which includes all of Beethoven's major works at the crazy price of $26. The sets were listed as "in stock".

I quickly ordered three sets, and posted this bargain over in the "Music" forum.

Amazon took not only the price down in a day or so, but they don't sell the set anymore! You have to import it from the Amazon.de site at a much higher cost and with expensive shipping. My three sets finally came last week - about 4 months after ordering.

Well, I just fired off an e-mail to Amazon about the price change.

What has me upset is I placed my order on December 7th at 4:52pm est.

The price changed around 7:58pm est.

I got my ship notice at 9:21pm was charged $224.98 for the Toshiba A3

So I politely asked them to credit the difference or I will consider refusing the shipment when it comes.

I shipped it UPS and I had it shipped to my job, and Im the one who receives the UPS shipments so it will be very easy for me to refuse it.

$25 dollars is $25 dollars these days................

From past experience, I have found that "shipped" means more like "somewhere in the process of shipping". Practically, it seems to mean "you can't stop the order now".

I do not believe for a second that when I place an order and come back 15 minutes later that it's shipped, or is in any way so far along the shipping process that it can't be changed. But there is a process disconnect between the people you communicate with and the actual shipping, the CS people don't have the ability to do much.

The common trick to get around instances like this is to also order something that is out of stock apparently for a while, preferably something "safe" like a DVD preorder. That gives you wiggle room, but locks in the price unless YOU change your mind, and you can always cancel the preorder when you're sure (and thus get the main item sooner).

As far as price drops, if a price drops on any item that Amazon sells themselves within 30 days of the day an item is shipped to you, their "Post-Order Price Guarantee" means they will refund you the difference. You don't have to hope they will refund it, it is their own policy that they issue a refund. (You can check out the "Help" section for the details of the Post-Order Price Guarantee). So while it's always good to be cordial when writing them, it's not like you have to say "pretty please" to get your refund on a price drop. It's their own policy.

While the Pre-Order Price Guarantee is automatic and you simply get charged the lower price as the item is shipped, the Post-Order Guarantee is not automatic; you have to request it. I would imagine a lot of people never follow up on price drops after they buy an item. I've had at least two or three items in recent weeks drop in price, and I was given refunds.

Changes in free disc offers, on the other hand, apparently don't fall under the Post-Order Price Guarantee because it's not a change in price. Given how much I've ordered from Amazon in recent weeks, I would have hoped they would have gone ahead and given me the two extra free discs, but oh well.

I too have also been surprised at how quickly all of a sudden they shipped the player to me. With the free shipping offer, they still shipped the player out the same day and it reached me overnight. But as long as one follows up on the Post-Order Price Guarantee, quickly shipping isn't a hinderance as far as future price drops within 30 days. I suppose it is a hinderance if you're looking to cancel the order within a few days.

Roy your response has settled my nerves alot. I look foward to my A3 arriving on Tuesday.

I guess with Amazon it comes down to being at the right place at the right time when you order.

Thanks, that is good info on the Post-Order-Price guarantee, didn't even know about it. Only thing is, I have no idea what the lowest price was now, it was yo-yo-ing like crazy over several days. I presume you have to know the prices you want them to "match"... or do they know their lowest prices withing a given time period?

The PostOP guarantee probably came about because they caught on to our own method of "PostOP guarantee", LOL, it was going on for many years, might as well legitimize it and make it easier for everybody. They never had that Pre-Order-Price guarantee for the longest time either, I know it pissed me off plenty of times and made pre-ordering eventually practically pointless.

I don't know all of the price changes on all of the players, I only know what within the last 4 or 5 days, the HD-A3 has dropped down to $199.98, which it currently is at.

As for having to know the price to have Amazon match it, I'm not sure. They would certainly have all of the records of every price jump, because they have to check those to give you a refund where applicable. Every time I've requested a refund due to a price drop, I've told them specifically what I previously paid and what the price currently was at. So I'm not sure what would happen if you just e-mailed them and told them that you ordered the item however many days ago, and you would like a refund if one is due for any price drop if a drop has occured. I also don't know what happens if, say, there is a price drop, but you wait another day before requesting a refund, by which time the price has increased again. I think as long as you request it and any price drop has occured within that 30 day window, they will give you the refund. So if you order an item for, say, $200 on December 1st, and it drops to $150 on December 15th, then goes back up to $200 on December 24th, and you ask for a refund on December 29th based on the December 15th price, I would imagine they would give you the refund. But I'm not sure on that.

I suppose the easiest thing to do would simply be to order whatever you're going to order, and then right before the 30 day window is up, simply e-mail them and ask for a refund based on the lowest price the item reached during that 30 days. But I'm not sure if that would work.

I ordered a A-35 a day before this offer. I got it the day the offer was announced. Didn't even open the box and asked what could be done. They gladly refunded the price difference. but the only way to get the movies was return the item, wait for them to issue a credit and then order it again. What a pain! This is why I hate internet buying. What is so hard even with a just paper only return. That is alot of money wasted on shipping for nothing. Needless to say I'm not sending it back. The movies I want are on e-bay cheap enough.

^ I kinda know what you mean about their return methods, it's all a de-humanized process and God forbid if you don't follow it exactly.

Like, I have several small damaged things I'm returning for exchange, all would easily fit in one small box, but noooo, they have different order numbers so I have to mail three separate boxes. So they say...but I'm going to combine them and "bend the system"...I'll see what happens.

I think I'm going to try that Post-Order-Price guarantee, even though I made one order more than 30 days ago, the price did go down substantially within that 30 days (all orders are from November though). Should get enough to get a Blade Runner set plus something else, I'll let you know how it works out.

It would be so nice if they made automatic credit adjustments, but like mail-in rebates, there's a good profit to be made leaving the onus to the customer to do some work.

Wow. I didn't know I had an Amazon warehouse in my backyard. My player shipped Friday and arrived today, and that's with free shipping. It was actually estimated for tomorrow in the email, and the movies a day later. I hope the movies come a day early too. Then I just have the problem of waiting forever for the damn rebate.
