I just watched "28 Weeks Later" last night. Even with DTS 1.5 Mbps "core", the audio really kicked ass. Highly recommended for the audio buffs. The transfer was also crisp and vivid.

I loved the film, proper horror and "terror". My girlfriend was panicked through most of the film, lol..

Yeah with Robocop, The Fly, From Hell, 28 Days Later, 28 Weeks Later all in my possession I think it's safe to say Fox and MGM are now officially back in the HDM game.

Hopefully they continue with releasing quality catalog titles even after the holidays. They still have a lot of making up to do in my book.

Side note about "28 Weeks Later".. I rarely comment on the reviews (they´re always opinions), but hi-def digest review made me wonder this time:

"Depending on the source material, grain and noise can also be fairly common issues -- shots frequently look fuzzy and indistinct. Again, aesthetically, it suits the material, but in all honesty there are sequences in '28 Weeks Later' where I forgot I was watching a Blu-ray and not just a very good-looking standard-def DVD."

"Instead, the only impact the mix really has is in its loudness. It's almost like the horror film equivalent of a Marilyn Manson song, with high-end harsh enough to be ear-piercing at loud volumes, while the sense of dynamics is quite overbearing, going from loud to soft and back again like a hammer."

This brings the fundamental question IMO; If the reviewer is not happy with the original look and sound mix, should he divide these type of comments from the actual "A/V review"?

I mean sure, the film doesn´t look like POTC or something (the look indeed somewhat varies), but it sure hell doesn´t look like DVD..

And the sound. Yes, it was loud, but this was a horror-film..

Dammit. ;)

(I have no grudge against hi-def digest, just that sometimes people see the film in so different way..)

What's that, Jari? Lossy is now good enough for BD, now there's still hardly a way to decode lossless DTS-MA in the home?

Of all the apologetic ....

 ;)

Red Dawn is to be another bare-bones release with a $39.99 MSRP. Another title released late, with no extras even though a Special Edition SD DVD already exists. Link

I think Jim K nails it earlier in this thread:

It looks to me as if MGM is the one holding back on bonus content, not Fox.

This brings the fundamental question IMO; If the reviewer is not happy with the original look and sound mix, should he divide these type of comments from the actual "A/V review"?

YES! I hate that films are knocked down on their scores because they don't appeal to the sensibilities of the reviewer in their style/design.

You should read the online reactions to 28 Days Later - people are shocked to see it look so bad in HD even though 90% of it was shot on 576p video. That's the point of the film, and how it looked in theaters (except for the ending, which was shot on film and looks great in HD apparently).

Some films are simply made a certain way. 300 has grain. 28 Days Later was shot on video, and Bram Stoker's Dracula is very dark. No, it's not "demo material" when you want to impress your friends, but it's the experience the filmmakers wanted you to have.

Deal with it! ;)

I'm really not sure what the point of putting a film that was shot in standard def video (in this case PAL) on HD. Seems kind of silly to me.

For the ending shot that was shot on film. ;)

Seriously, though - aside from upscaling, your point is valid. But that shouldn't be a knock on the film or the transfer. In a review, one can surely dock it for not being a "value purchase" due to this factor, but knocking the video transfer when it's the best it can possibly be also seems silly to me.

I don´t fully follow you on this Cees? If the "core" already sounds great, I probably go nuts (in a good way) with "full" DTS-HD master track..

Actually just today I called to one of my local A/V stores and asked about e.g. Onkyo´s HD-receivers (HDMI 1.3, Dolby TrueHD/DTS-HD support and very decent price).. And the firmware update to PS3 is probably not that far away..

So Cees, it´s coming, whether you like it or not. I have also several Fox-titles on order. Bring it on! ;)

I have to agree.. I wonder who´s making these decisions? Must be some SD DVD-fan (want to keep some "exclusive" stuff on the SD DVDs rather than Blu-ray-releases).

Oh okay I can see that. If the ending of the film looks radically different than the rest of it and HD will show that off then its a great choice for HD.

I agree with you completely, and this was one of my problems with the review of The Last Starfighter over at High Def Digest. He was knocking the picture quality for looking like a film that was shot in the 80s! If he doesn't like the style of the photography thats fine...but he shouldn't take points off of his score because the HD transfer is accurately representing that style.

The Last Starfighter had way better colour in the cinema back in the 80's. Lost colour is what I'd count off for, not looks like the 80's! The colour looks washed out to me. It was never a gorgeous film but it looked better than this disc.

I think I'm going to have to disagree with your assessment of The Last Starfighter on HD DVD. While I can't remember exactly what it looked like in the theater in 84, I don't think the new HD DVD looks washed out at all.

I agree. While not a perfect transfer, the HD DVD release looked pretty darn good. While my memory is a little suspect on movies I saw a few weeks ago, let alone 20 + years ago, the colors seemed to hold up quite well. The only drawback I saw was that the improved detail made the early computer graphics really show their age. Loved every min. of it.:)

Guyz, I remember Last Starfighter so well because I saw it 3-5 times in the cinema. It was a more colourful film with better fleshtones than the HD-DVD. I remember it well, inbetween listening to Pac Man fever and devouring dots, I liked 'dat movie. It had Rrobert Preston a personal fav. The effects were cool for then.

There's many, many movies I don't remember all that well. This ain't one of 'em. I was a cult follower, relatively.
