The AFI series is finally coming to film scores! Elmer Bernstein, Jerry Goldsmith, Alfred Newman, Miklos Rozsa, Max Steiner, Franz Waxman and John Williams all have 11 entries; Herrmann nine, Tiomkin and Korngold with seven. To me, this is the most exciting AFI list in a long time.
Here's the official page: http://www.afi.com/tvevents/100years/scores.aspx
And here's the 250 scores nominated so far:

It looks like film series such as Star Wars and LoTR might have one film to represent the series; the list doesn't say that, but none of the other films besides the first one get an entry.
My guess for the top ten:
Gone with the Wind
The Adventures of Robin Hood
Star Wars
Ben Hur
Vertigo
Psycho
To Kill a Mockingbird
Lawrence of Arabia
The Big Country
The Godfather, Titanic, or LOTR (if considered as a series)
