Very clever...The shame is that we had THE BEST artwork on our product when I worked there thanks to the guidance of George Feltenstein and the Creative Services people and designers.

After the fiasco of THE GREATEST STORY EVER TOLD, it is going to take two or three reviews, before I by this. My confidence with MGM is at an all time low.

I've yet to see any reviews on this. Has anybody seen or heard anything? Amazon shipped my copy yesterday, so I'm in - good or bad.

Har har! I just saw the cover for the first time! It looks like Nero standing there with HIS fiddle, surveying his handiwork as Rome burns...burns to ashes...

The fact that the Disc streets tomorrow and there have been no reviews doesn't leave me with the impression this is good transfer (after Greatest Story Ever Told - and what's up with "Teen Wolf" having no chapter stops or anything????)

I may send it back unopened to Amazon with an explaination of bad product quality (Maybe I'll throw in the Greatest Story Ever Told and send it back too)

You'd send it back with that explanation without reading any reviews??? At least hold onto it for a few hours - by this time tomorrow we should know the story. I already sold my DVD so I for one will be opening my copy to check it out.

No, no, no, I would read the reviews first (of course)
If the reviews are good : I open the disc and it goes on the shelf with all the good little discs.
If the reviews are bad: then I send it back

Right, of course right!

I thought you said that images from The Greatest Story Ever Told looked very good to stunning in parts? Did you change your mind about it?

I was refering to what I thought the differances between the DVD and Blu-ray and I did not make that connection obvious.. I read that the poster I was replying to was interested in the differeance between the two. I do think the Blu-ray is better than the DVD, but again it is all in the eye of the beholder. I corrected the statetment later. But I am honored that you read and remembered my posts.

I look forward to reading different opinions on software releases.

I got my copy today, but I am working on the review of Casino Jack (up tonight) and haven't had a chance to even crack the cellophane.

Oh, good, it sounded like you were so disgusted with TGSET that you had abandoned all hope for Fiddler. I agree signs are not good, but I will hold out a little hope while I still can...

Matt, looking forward to your review.

Unfortunately, I have a post-work meeting tonight, so I won't get home until about 8. I expect to be checking this out by 8:05...

well Amazon already started the shipping process so I couldn't cancel it. But if the reviews are good - great, if not...back it goes.

The GSET Disc and the lack of pre-release reviews has me worried - although, it is just a disc, it's not like the world is coming to an end (Japan)

Blu-ray.com has their review up. Very positive, with twin 4.5/5 scores for PQ and AQ.

I have just finished skimming through the disc, and FWIW (which is not much) I think the reviewer pretty much got it right. I first watched the entire "Tradition" sequence (one of my all-time favorite opening sequences) and it looks fantastic - very filmlike, with lots of detail. There is some slight haloing from time to time along the rooftops, but I doubt I would have noticed it had I not been specifically looking for it. Things continue in the same vein throughout the first half of the film. I noticed the same thing the reviewer did about the scene right after the Entr'acte - it was not up to what came before. Not sure what happened there. In general, the film looks much softer and hazier in the 2nd half, but that's the way it has always looked and is, I believe, the filmmakers' intent, reflecting not only the change in the seasons to fall and winter but also the rapidly increasing changes in the lives of the people of Anatevka.

Overall, I'd say MGM did a pretty good job and I'm happy to add this one to my collection. Will be interested to hear what the rest of you guys think.

Haven't watched it yet, but most comments have been in the "pretty good" vein. Too bad, other discs gotten "Execellent", "stunning", "maybe best disc of the year?" - those are the reviews that lead me to purchase a film I'm on the fence about. "Pretty good" doesn't cut it for an ungrade (5th version?) on

Blu-ray.

Laser Disc (Pan and Scan -- it was the 80's)

Laserdisc Widescreen

Laser Box Set

DVD

DVD special Edition

Blu-ray? ...The Blu-ray better be damn execellent otherwise why bother

To date most Blu-ray's I've purchased have been of films that are first time buys for me (There have been maybe 20 upgrades - but with the exception of "Bull Durham" and "Greatest Story Ever Told" - (where there's not much difference from the DVD) those upgrades have been fantastic.

A "pretty good" Blu-ray blows all previous formats away, that's why.

Let me be clear that this new Fiddler blu is a VERY noticeable upgrade over the DVD. Well worth the 20 bucks as far as I'm concerned. YMMV.
