"Imprint" 1 star.

This is unfortunately the worst Miike film I've seen. Very unfortunate as it would seem to have so much promise on paper. Same screenwriter as "Audition", and very similar in style and subject matter to "Box" and even "Gozu", two of my favorite recent Miike films.

This film was a trainwreck. Yes, I know Billy Drago is only a television and genre film actor, but that doesn't mean he's not the worst actor on the planet. Let me put it this way: he was out-acted in this film by non-English speaking actors reciting their lines phonetically. And they sucked, too.

Not a thing works. The pathos and bathos was laughable. The "rashomon" like iterations of the flashback story became quickly tiresome and led nowhere. Even the last possible virtue of this film - it's supposedly uncompromising subject matter that apparently caused Showtime to not air it - was limply executed and utterly failed even suggest something shocking or taboo.

The torture scene was partially straight out of "audition", at least the needles and their deliberate placement, and this caused me some small amount of squirming. But then it became purely an aesthetic tableaux, with cribs from Japanese bondage. The eye/mouth needles held some intrinsic aesthetic value. But again purely superficial.

I have no idea why Showtime failed to air this episode, at least for the reasons they provided. It might not have deserved airing simply because it sucked so bad, but that certainly hasn't stopped Showtime before. I guess one simply can't broach the subject of abortion, even as an aside? At any rate, there's no reason to defend this film on any basis. It is an utter failure.

Sukiyaki Western Django - C-
Miike has never been this limp and uninspiring.

Kicking off Round 2 of Miike-fest, This time around I think I have about 10 on deck that have been released in the 4 years since my original binge.

Graveyard of Honor - B+ (feels like I'm underrating this as images are haunting me today. fascinating lead character. superb filmmaking and a scene so visceral and disgusting that even a hardened gorehound like me had to avert my eyes)

Zebraman - B- (has its moments, but more cheesy/silly then genuinely funny. It's no Kick-Ass)

The Great Yokai War - B+
Demon Pond - B (another departure, this is a filmed, minimalist staged play complete with live audience)
Silver - B- (answers the question "what if Miike directed a Skinemax film")

Good to hear, I thought what little I saw of 13 Assassins looked good.

Yakuza: Like a Dragon - B+ (based on a videogame, this is the kind of hilarious violence, strangeness and strong characterizations despite sometimes incomprehensible subplots that Miike is so good at.)
Detective Story - B (could maybe go higher on this, the lead gives a fine comic performance, but falls just short of Miike's better output)
Big Bang Love, Juvenile A - C+ (I either didn't understand this at all or am thinking it is much more complex than it actually is)

Osaka Tough Guys - B

Really low budget J-vid, but a pretty funny/entertaining yakuza parody in Miike's unique style.

This was the 40th Miike film I've seen.
