FWIW Jim, while I am a fan of The Seventh Seal, but unlike most, I don’t think that this is one of Bergman’s best efforts.

Regarding the Seventh Seal vs Blue: I like the Seventh Seal, but to me it's a little superficial philosophy while I think Blue touches deeper psychology issues.

Another shameful round for me too :b

Abstain - no Leopard
Abstain - no Cabinet
l'Atalante
Abstain - no Chloe
Abstain - no Insomnia
Abstain - no Manon of the Spring
Abstain - neither
Abstain - no Autumn Sonata but Bicycle Thieves is one of my favorite

The question of how one can have faith in a benevolent God in a world gone to Hell is superficial?

Anywho:
abstain, no Leopard
The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari
L'Atalante
Chloe In The Afternoon, extremely tough and it sucks that both of these exceptional films is going to get tossed.
M
abstain, neither
abstain, no Tin Drum

Well Brook, that question is basically philosophy 101, isn't it? Doesn't everyone start wondering about that in their teens?

I love the movie, it's entertaining, but I just meant to say it doesn't have anything really new to say.

Ah, but Simon, the question is known by everyone, Philosophy 101 as you say, because it is one of the great questions of mankind. Just because an idea is considered by zillions of people around the globe and throughout time, does not make it a superficial one. If it were not a powerful, compelling, interesting, and nebulous question, than why would it continue to be asked rather than passing into the graveyard of history?

And I don't believe that the treatment of the idea within The Seventh Seal is superficial either. I would see the premises of Blue to be a much less universal set of circumstances. Few people have the opportunity to run away from their lives and leave everything behind and be able to survive successfully enough to have the revelation like Julie or Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz that "what they thought they had lost was right here all along".

Julie's wealth and privilege allow her the option of leaving it all behind and yet living quite comfortably with no employment. While most of us are not that lucky and would have experiences far more like that of Stoszek or Vagabond were we to try something similar. We would merely go from hurt and loss to destitution and disaster. The handsome lover at the end of the rainbow is as much a fantasy as the land of Oz.

You made good points Brook.

Superficial was a poor choice of word, I meant that it doesn't really bring anything new. But then there is no definitive answer, so I'm not sure what I was expecting. But I feel a movie like Ordet, showing us how different individuals live their faith, made me think a little more.

I probably need to refresh my memory as I haven't watched the Seventh Seal in over a year, but the impression that I had the last time I watched it was of a letdown at the end. I told to myself, well that's all he has to say? I can watch the international news everyday and it will bring me to the same questioning about god.

About Blue, that's an interesting take. I was never really bothered by the circumstances or the conclusion myself. What I like is the psychological study of one person, how one might react to grief: the need for isolation, the anger towards the world, the study of the behavior that follows such a loss.

Fair enough Lew. I've only seen a handful of Bergman's films but for me SS is one of the better films of it's type.

The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie--hate to vote against one of my favorites--but Buñuel just squeezes by.
