Oh, yeah.....I have a few in my collection that some might snicker at. And I really don't care. Some I bought (or my girlfriend did), because they were really cheap and I found them mildly entertaining and some I loved for one reason or another. Yep, we own both Mummy movies. We just don't take them too seriously and find them amusing as cheesy popcorn flicks. There are others that I had a fondness for in my teen years or are just guilty pleasures. The only ones that I really wonder how long I will keep at the moment are the Nightmare on Elm Street films. I watched them all once and only a few are really any good. I'm sure one day, I'll put 'em up on ebay.

I travel a lot as part of my job. Hell, my job is to travel (that's the airline biz), so I spend a lot of nights either in hotels or waiting to go somewhere (in a hotel). So I watch more DVDs when I'm on the road than I do at home. It's great to be able to toss 8-10 DVDs in the bag and watch any fun cheesy movie I want rather than whatever crap is not on TV at the time on the 5 channels the hotel gets.

Personally, I love perusing other people's collections. I think it's interesting to see what different DVDs people have collected. My brother once made fun of one or two movies in our collection and I had to point out that this comment came from a man who counts Poison Ivy 2 as a part of his collection.

Although, I don't know what to say about a collection with 8 1/2 and Road House
Wow...Fellini and Swayze. That kind of has a nice ring to it. Sounds like a great double bill!

Actually, anyone who can honestly say he appreciates movies by the great Italian film director and can still revel in guilty pleasures like Swayze's bar bouncer epic is actually pretty cool in my book. :)

I'm planning to buy Road House for the cheese factor.:D

And I agree with Bill, movies define people, it's quite interesting to see people's preferences.

While, I can certainly understand the occasional "blind purchase" or the "gift" that was given to you, or even a DVD you purchased just because one of your kids really wanted it, one really has to wonder about people who buy the worst crap on the planet, and actually do so, with love for the film in question.

For example, if a person's collection consisted of movies such as

Battlefield Earth
Scooby-Doo
Freddy Got Fingered
The Grinch (Jim Carey)

and nothing but those types of movies, it really says a lot about a person. As I said earlier - IMO DVD collections really do say a lot about a person, and I would certainly be embarrassed of owning the above titles.

For sure, I don't want to know those people at all. Especially anyone who saw Scooby-Doo, which I swear is one of the WORST films ever concived.

Then again, I want to own Road House.... weird.

And here is the list of "mediocre" movies.

http://www.dvdaficionado.com/dvds.ht...ocretimewaster
Wow...I own over 150 DVDs and none of them are on that list. Does that mean I actually have taste? ;)

Seriously, though, as has already been said, everyone has their own "guilty pleasures", and that's cool. I guess I start to get a holier-than-thou attitude when I see someone's DVD collection and it's predominantly made up of crappy movies. If I were single again, I wouldn't be inclined to date someone who's DVD collection consisted mostly of films from that list, for instance. Since I love movies so much, there might be some serious compatibility issues there.

Personally I could care less what anyone thinks of my collection.

Back in the day of cheap DVD's (3 for $1 & $20 no minimum coupons) I bought tons of stuff on a whim. I rarely, if ever, do that now.

I've also found my tastes changing over the last couple of years. Every once in a while I'll "thin" my collection and sell or trade the titles that no longer interest me.

If I enjoy a film, no matter how "bad", I don't have any problem keeping it in my collection. There just movies for goodness sake. It hardly matters what other think IMO.

Just looked at Al's list of 300 mediocre titles posted here:

I have Big Trouble - I loved the book by Dave Barry, enjoyed the film as a live-action adaptation of the book, and I bought the disc half-price.

I have Jurassic Park 3 - I had the other two, and again, it was a good special.

I have both Mummy films - they were 2 for $50 (basically half-price), and they are good dumb popcorn films (although I usually end Mummy Returns just before the Scorpion King appears at the end). That said, the Karloff "Mummy" was much better.

I don't own The Truth About Charlie, but I would buy it if a good quality of Charade was on the disc (which it is in r1, hopefully will be in r4, otherwise I'll import). I would NEVER actually watch The Truth About Charlie.

I would like to think most of the films in my collection are fairly defensible, films you could watch multiple time and find something stimulating and fascinating. Sure, I have a couple of dumb fun films that I bought cheap just for a Friday night when I'm too tired to think, but doesn't everyone. But I think I could defend most of my collection. I don't have enough money and I spend too much already just buying films I'm passionate about to spend more on films I really don't care about.

Well my DVD collection has over 50 of the titles that Al has deemed mediocre. At over 500 DVDs in my collection, that would mean about 10%. What can I say, I like all kinds of movies.

While I do own 100 Girls, I also own Lawrence of Arabia. I can defend all 533 DVDs in my collection. The one thing you will never find in my collection is any Adam Sandler movie. I haven't found him funny since SNL. While other people think he is hilarious.

I would like to hear what other people think of my collection. It won't make me go out and sell any of them, but I always like to hear other peoples opinions.

I dont buy films for other people. I buy for me. could care less what someone thinks of my 1,000 + dvd collection. I like sharing my link because of the "turn on" factor. I may turn a title onto someone else, just like I've been turned on by anothers collection. I like to see what taste another may have...but I dont judge him/her based on a few titles....thats silly. all my titles me something to me....for one reason or another, and someones choices should not be dwelled upon...just accepted.

what really gets me is when people have to "weed out" the collection every year to get rid of the milk-toast. I dont buy, just to toss-out later, or trade, or sell or whatever. I'm building a library to suit my film needs through enjoyment and research. I have no time for blind-buys....and if people would just do enough research....you wont go into it blind.

btw, I love "bad" films...and am starting to collect them. just remember, one mans trash is another mans treasure.

There are a few lame films I bought as they were part of a good series and I had to have them all. I drew the line with the Crow, though. Plus some stuff I bought cheap that I hadn't seen before.

As for porn, if anyoen wants low-quality 70's French lesbian porn with a horrendous English dub, i have several titles I'll give you cheap. It's embarrassing to own them. And this is coming from a guy who has The Tox Box.

I think one more category should be added to Paul_Scott's list:

- movies that were purchased solely for their ability to show off the [insert subwoofer, processer, or other hardware here] when friends come over.

For the most part, I have resisted this temptation, even though it means I've acquired a moderately expensive sound system largely to play black and white samurai flicks from the 1950s and comedies from the late 1970s. And by the way, I challenge anyone to mock my copy of The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the Eighth Dimension!

Man, I only have 8 of the titles on Al's list. I thought I was doing better than that. Oh well.

For those easily offended by others commenting on your taste in DVDs get yourself a spouse as the constant eye rolling and disapproving sighs as the discs are put in the player will cure you of your sensitivity soon enough.;)

I've got 25 on that list. Some are REALLY bad (e.g. Hope Floats), others I really enjoy (Three to Tango, Whole Nine Yards).
But, at the end of the day, I couldn't care less what other people think of me. My friends are oft reminded of this, when I roll into their (literally) million-dollar-homes neighborhood in my gold '80 Z28 (check the link).:D

I don't see my crappy movies as a sign of my poor taste... I think they represent my "open-mindedness" in embracing all forms of film. Why else would I own "Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo"? :)

Okay.. someone gave it to me... and it's a bootleg copy... now I am sad.

Everyone has their own guilty pleasures. I sure do and I have quite a few of them. I don't mind showing them since I didn't buy my dvds thinking whether others will like it or not. As long as I enjoy my dvds, all is good.

It often annoys me when people say I have a crappy collection just because I have a few guilty pleasures...hey, some of them are dirt cheap or free. Even so, it shouldn't matter as long as I get the most out of MY dvds.
