Earthquake DVD Sensuround track is pitiful (1 Viewer)

Not much rumble, dialog comes out in the left or right speakers. It's also tinny. I don't know what the hell they were thinking.

The 5.1 track is much more what I expected the sensuround track to be.

But to those old enough to remember (I saw Earthquake in Sensurround very young and don't remember the effect)

Is the sensurround track anything like it was in the theater. I always thought Earthquake was mono with the extra Sensurround track. Yet the Sensurround track is 3.1.

Does anyone know if Earthquake was any type of Stereo configuration or if it was mono (besides the extra LFE track of course).

I'm glad to have Earthquake in anamorphic and with a soundtrack (not the sensurround one though) that really rumbles but in the face of the Posieden Adventure and Towering Inferno releases the DVD is so pitiful. Without even scene selection or a trailer.

It was even less than I expect from Universal.

I'm virtually certain it was mono + LFE.

Not quite the way I remember it. I saw this thing in a commercial theater twice back in 1974 (a second time because the "Sensurround" low-frequency track failed during the first screening). I seem to recall a multichannel soundtrack. But, as I said, I only saw this thing back in '74 and memory is far from perfect.

I was 18 in 1974. I recall "Earthquake" being in 35mm mono Panavision with Sensurround placed during the major earthquake sequences only. Large speakers were attached to the rear walls of the Tower Theatre in Houston and let out the low intensity bass frequencies at perhaps three points throughout the film.

I haven’t noticed any faults on this film in the three years now that I have had it, region 2 DVD, the score can be hard hitting at the beginning, when the title hits the screen with a slam!

During chapter 8, the big one! Where everyone runs for the lift, the LFE.1 then turns off, but if your home cinema is set-up really good, you’ll feel a deep new rumble on the centre and partly on the left and right channels.

The split-surrounds on this mix, can rumble if you tweak it, and if you got some matching surrounds going all around the room, with four or more on the back and three or four down each sidewall, you’ll be singing a different tune!?

I’ve just placed the film on! I haven’t any (((Sensurround))) syndrome in a few weeks now

I mentioned the same thing in the other Earthquake thread. Sensurround no where to be found.

Regin 2 may be better, but the recently released region 1 is terrible (sensurround wise!)

Well, the 5.1 track is more in line with my Sensurround expectations, I like it.

Unless you have the original loudspeaker array via “Cerwin-Vega” I saw a documentary a few years ago on this theme the deserter films of the early 1970’s.

WOW, I’m tripping out over on this side of the world, WOW that LFE.1 is wicked! 115dbc weighting, oh I can easily take it to 120dbc!!! yeah JBL is just blood low!

For a young eight year old, seeing "Earthquake" in (((Sensurround))) three times, left its mark on me! I’m still shaking from the aftereffccts!

The original EARTHQUAKE: Sensurround and MONO or SENSURROUND and STEREO?

Both are correct. Some prints were magoptic containing L-C-R (blank surround) while the optical track contained the trigger signals that activated the rumble box. There was also an optic only print with the trigger tones encoded into a mono mix of the soundtrack. Lots of theatres that were mag stereo equipped only got the mono prints, though, which was true of most mag stereo theatres at the time (studios were stingy with those more expensive mag prints).

I was a projectionist when "Earthquake" came out and we ran an optical mono print. I never thought the effect was that good, myself. It was a big hit because it was something new and different. If made today it would be far more spectacular.

i see EE, mosquito like noise all over the place.

during the first small tremor 5 minutes in my svs did not even register a lfe.
little red light stayed on, both using 5.1 And 3.1.

the sensurround on the 3.1 didnt sound like lfe it sounded like a sound effect right in the soundtrack, like a foley effect added,same as a door tap being added for that sound.

the lfe didnt come on right away even during the big quake, took about 3 seconds, i know thats not a big deal.
still here again just seems like an added sound effect.

the 5.1 sounded fake, almost like the forced/matrixed stereo on my denon
the low sounded great on the 5.1
a natural rumble not overcooked, just right.
felt more like what sensurround was like to my memory of it.

adding to the disapointment is the *cough* "menu".
you have language and PLAY.
no menu chioce for chapters.
they're there though.

universal should be ashamed for releasing this on the same day as the superb dvds for poseiden and towering inferno.

just a disgrace.


i should mention that color looked very good
