Volume #100!! Congrats Jim!! 100 threads in just a few weeks, I think that has to be a record for the forum, keep em coming Jimmy! :):emoji_thumbsup:

Roger Corman's a great choice for your milestone thread, I love his Poe classics! And we agree on our number one, Masque of the Red Death is magnifico! Sad to see you didn't like The Raven much, a fun horror fantasy with a fantastic cast of horror greats, Price, Karloff, Lorre plus a young Jack Nicholson as Lorre's son.

I'd like to see a lot more of Corman's stuff. He has a very strong visual quality. Last weekend I caught part of St. Valentine's Day Massacre and was impressed with what I saw of it.

* - I'm sure I've seen more, probably many more, but I couldn't tell you which ones.

Corman points out a difference between films that are badly made, and films that are well-made, but bad. I don't like any of Corman's bad movies anymore than I like well-made movies like Cries & Whispers or Do the Right Thing, but Corman's films, while bad, don't do anything to particularly irritate me, except just being bad. In other words, I have no respect for Corman, but I don't hate him the way I do directors like Roeg or Sirk.

Corman's films are benignly bad, and while they would never make their way into my dvd collection, they'd also never make my list of the worst movies ever made, which is filled with films that are technically better, but malignantly bad. :)

Isn't that a tad bit harsh considering you've only seen three of his films? :D

In reality, Corman probably could have made better films but he was more interested in making money. There's no denying he had an eye for talent and those who hold JAWS and STAR WARS to such high praise should also give Corman a lot of credit. It did take the studios 20+ years to figure out how to make big cash on less than stellar topics.

Agreed Michael, given the reputation as a schlock-meister he's accrued the last 20 years or so, I found movies like Masque and St. Valentine's Day surprisingly well made. He could have turned out good studio films (St. Valentine's Day has Jason Robards and a few other "names") or quality independents, but I believe it was John Sayles who said that Corman was more interested in making money than in making a good movie.

Perhaps. But it's based on seeing 3 of his films spanning a good chunk of his career, and a general impression of the rest of his work as described by others. I've heard people say good and bad things about his movies, but I've never heard them described as anything other than quickly produced B movies.

I'm not sure where to stand really, George. Most people love his Poe/Price films but I actually find these less fun, if technically better, than some of the "B" movies. I do however think he deserves a Lifetime Achievement Award. Again, I think his eye for talent is pretty much untouched by anyone in history and he had a major part in what these "B" movies could do. Not to mention the thing with JAWS and STAR WARS, which is credited as starting the summer blockbuster. Considering Corman would make films for $5,000-$10,000 and bring back millions is pretty good considering some of the studio films that were bombing at the same time.

With the grindhouse, drive-in and midnight showings gone, we'll probably never see anyone else like Corman, which is somewhat sad and somewhat good.

I'd personally put THE WILD ANGELS at the top and I think it's every bit as good as EASY RIDER.

26.Gunslinger (1956) **

At this point, I should get around to purchasing the R2 DVD of THE UNDEAD (1957). But where's my most-wanted Corman title, NOT OF THIS EARTH (1957)?!

P.S. Mike, I'm shocked you think so highly of THE WILD ANGELS (which I've only just watched for the first time) and, at the same time, were so hard on THE TRIP - which I found to be even better than I had hoped! While I admit to being let down by GAS-S-S-S on first viewing, my recent reacquaintance with it via MGM's double-feature DVD proved to be a more satisfactory experience and I actually liked it quite a bit. As for THE TOMB OF LIGEIA, I think you need to watch it again:D: it is simply one of my favorite horror films ever.

I loved THE WILD ANGELS and think it's better than EASY RIDER. It's not as "technically" well made but it sure is a lot of fun. I'm really iffy on the Poe stuff even the ones that I like. I'm sure TOMB will get another viewing at some point. I've still got a couple here to watch but I did finish the Lions Gate double feature of VIKING WOMEN/SEA SERPENT and TEENAGE CAVEMAN. :)

Hey Mike - thanks for the reply, even at this late stage:)!

By the way, where did you get hold of the "Director's Cut" of GAS-S-S-S (1971)?
