Edited to add Casino.

Jim had said above That was an excellent recommendation Jim. Casino is a borderline film for me, one that falls just on the other side of a purchase, but it's by far my second favorite film of his, and very much in the Goodfellas vein. I think the story isn't as good, mostly cause it's more predictable. It's also more violent, which for me isn't a good thing. It may even be a little too like Goodfellas, what with the narration, wacko Pesci character, etc., for it to stand on it's own. But definitely close.

I'm glad you gave it a shot George.

As for the amped up violence, for me it doesn't seem all that more violent than some of the scenes in Goodfellas i.e. the Bar beating, the butcher knife scene, the bullet in the head scene, etc. But I do admit to probably being a little desensitized to violence in movies.

Story wise, I agree it is very similar to Goodfellas which is a good thing for me :) & why I thought it would be worth a viewing for you.

The one turn-off that I thought you might have was the Sharon Stone character & her relationship with the DeNiro character. I don't know if it's just me but her character makes my skin crawl, jeeezus what a manipulative bitch. (Reminds me of my first wife  :D ) Every time I watch it, I always find myself wanting to yell at the DeNiro character for being such a friggin' chump. ;)

Well, I wasn't really bothered by her character per se, but De Niro's interaction with her was pretty hard to swallow. It's not until the very end that he even blows up at her, and then really does nothing (doesn't hit her etc.). His character seemed much more likely to blow up at her earlier, and escalate to violence. I realize that he 'loved' her, but he was willing to break people's hands for cheating (and who knows what else), it's hard to believe that even after she fucked around on him, is heard trying to get someone to have him killed, steals his money, steals his kid, etc., etc., that he would only yell at her.

My favorites are Raging Bull, The Age of Innocence, Life Stories and Mean Streets. I also have a lot of affection for New York, New York, which I somehow dig, even though I'm not familiar with the musicals it quotes. Goodfellas, Taxi Driver and Last Temptation are all excellent, but I don't have very strong enthusiastic feelings about any of them. I did find the first half of Temptation tedious and badly acted, but the second half compensated considerably. I think Age of Innocence is his most underappreciated and his last two films (Gangs and Aviator) were really rather lifeless attempts at polished Hollywood glamour projects.

Overall, I think the things that strike me the most about his overall career is the inconsistancy. Very few other directors can make several all-time masterpieces and just as many misguided stinkers. But I'll be in line for his next movie, all the same, and maintain a general enthusiasm for the guy all the way.

The Big Shave - C+

TCM showed these tonight, unfortunately I fell asleep in the middle of It's Not Just You, Murray!, which seemed like the best of the 3 in the little I saw. I was also kind of groggy when I woke up for The Big Shave so wasn't fully open to it.
