There's lots of disagreement about what makes a great director. For some it's zombies, for others 2 french people sipping tea and spouting pseudo-philosophy. :) For me, it's telling a great story cinematically, totally engulfing you and entertaining the fuck out of you
. John Sturges may not do that as well as Hitchcock or Wilder, but he's still one of the best, and certainly a great director in my book! If I want to ruminate on the meaning of life, I'll read a philosophy book. If I want to watch a great film, one sure fire way is to put on one by John Sturges.

Lots of testosterone here.

Out of 4 stars:
Bad Day at Black Rock: :star: :star: :star: 1/2
The Great Escape: :star: :star: :star:
The Magnificent Seven: :star: :star: :star:
Never So Few: :star: :star:

I just saw, and thoroughly enjoyed, Bad Day... for the first time. Spencer Tracy is great (as usual) and he delivers one of the coolest karate chops in the history of film here.
