ISHIRO HONDA

Geez, I can't even begin to do this one. I know I've seen Godzilla, and I know I've seen lots more of these on tv growing up, but I don't know which ones or how many.

And I know that I have no interest in watching any of them ever again, or having any on dvd.

I know I've seen Godzilla, and a bunch of the other "Big G" flicks, but don't really remember which ones.

Well, I fessed up to seeing them, but I can't claim to remember which ones, except the original. Cool has nothing to do with it - I readily admit to having seen and liked lots of 'uncool' movies, and not liking a number of 'cool' movies. If it's any consolation, while I'd never voluntarily rewatch a Godzilla film (with the possible exception of Godzilla meets Bambi :)), if my only choice was Godzilla or a film by Bunuel, I'd be popping in Godzilla faster than you can say "Godard loves Jerry Lewis".

Hold on to your knickers Steve, snobby-film guy is a Godzilla fan!

Your son would probably like them George. I've got Jesse hooked and he loves 'em. (he's 4 too)

Unfortunately, I've never seen any of the sequels A. uncut and b. in Japanese. Though unlike a lot of fans, the humor value of the dubs is a lot of what I appreciate and I don't know if some of the lesser entries in the series would even be watchable if they were truly meant to be more serious. As I've said before, I don't like the early 90's films as much as I like some of the maligned late 60's and 70's entries, because the 90's films try to hard to be serious which is difficult to accept when you've got a guy in a suit stomping on models.

Honda is a very good choice because unlike the modern directors, he could make serious-minded Godzilla films that really worked.

*1. Godzilla - A- ( I still kick myself that I didn't make an effort to see it when it got a re-release a year or two ago. It only played here one week and then was gone)
2. Mothra vs. Godzilla - A- (2nd best G-movie after the original)
3. Ghidrah, The Three-Headed Monster - A- (frame story is weak but really, really good fights)
4. Godzilla's Revenge - B+ (Unfairly maligned; Yes, it suffers from a low-budget excuse to recycle a lot of previous footage, but I thought this was an interesting idea for a "different" kind of Godzilla film and is a really good children's film. Plus Minya is so cute :b )
5. Mothra - B+ (Just love the Mothra chicks. That song never gets old Mosura-AH, Mosura-AH...
6. Destroy All Monsters - B
7. The War of the Gargantuas - B

8. King Kong vs. Godzilla - B- (kind of funny with decent fights, but I just can't get past the King Kong suit, looks like Kong is shedding)
9. Rodan - B- (The cut, English dub version)
10. Terror of Mechagodzilla - D (one of the worst)

Own: 1 (I have Revenge, vs. Mothra, Ghidrah, and Terror of Mechagodzilla on VHS)

You may very well be right about that (though he just turned 5 today :)). He certainly likes dinosaurs, although I'm currently working on introducing him to the Flintstones. :)

I think all little boys are into dinosaurs and trains and monsters, etc.

I don't own the Jurassic Park movies, but he enjoys the silent version of The Lost World.

Bill, is War of the Gargantuas on DVD?

Bill and Brook surprised me too Jim. Godzilla, Rodan & Mothra don't get mentioned in Sight & Sound much. ;)

Yep, spectacular stuff. Godzilla has lost his big eyed goofiness and returned to his rampaging mutant dinosaur roots, and the visual effects are better in the recent entries, digital stereo sound is also a big plus.

Not any that I'm aware of...there might be a Japanese R2 disc somewhere.

The movie is a shitload of fun!
Two giant shaggy-looking cavemen-like brothers, each a different colour, beat the crap out of each other for 90 minutes causing mass destruction everywhere they go.

Also included are a groovy and uber cool Russ Tamblyn and a groovy 60's style pop song 'The Words Get Stuck in My Throat' which is absolutely hilarious.

Seen this about a dozen times, but don't own any copy of it. :frowning:

In order of merit:

1.KING KONG VS. GODZILLA (1963) BOMB
2.GODZILLA VS. MOTHRA (1964) BOMB

Regardless of my ratings above, I'd be interested in checking out both Japanese and U.S. versions of GOJIRA (1954), as well as THE MYSTERIANS (1957).

Mario, my advice is for you to stay far, far away from anymore Godzilla films, with the exception of the original Japanese version of GOJIRA (1954). See that very serious and grimly-toned feature (which you may deem worth of possibly two or three stars) and then pretend you've never heard of these films after that. It's obvious they're not for you, and if you can't have fun with KING KONG and MOTHRA (two of the best, especially MOTHRA), you'll never like any others. You've told me recently that you may want to check out GODZILLA'S REVENGE (considered one of the poorest and most juvenile, even by diehards!) so save yourself the trouble.
