My Bergman experience started off badly. The first film of his I watched was Cries & Whispers, which is, to this day, my choice for the worst film ever made. I had very little hope for any other Bergman films, and was frankly shocked when I saw The Seventh Seal and how good it was. I still have no idea how the genius who made The Seventh Seal could make the pile of shit that is Cries and Whispers. Baffling! It's like finding out that the artist who painted Dogs Playing Poker also painted the Sistine Chapel, only Dogs Playing Poker is the greatest work of art ever made compared to Cries & Whispers. :)

Bergman is one of my weakest directors, but I still think he's brilliant and I look forward to each of his films as I get to them. Wild Strawberries is in the next five films or so I'll be watching:

INGMAR BERGMAN

Fanny and Alexander (1982) - :star::star::star::star: - Just absolutely beautiful and incredible piece of Dickensian style story that's better than any Dickens representation I've seen.
Persona (1966) - :star::star::star::star: - Damn the monologue about the beach is incredibly intense and powerful. And the interviews at the end... I'm still blown away.
The Seventh Seal (1957) - :star::star::star::star: - one of the great films ever about life, death, religion and faith.

Ranking:
  1. Fanny and Alexander
  2. The Seventh Seal
  3. Persona
More than any other of these surveys, these rankings are interchangeable (pretty much) with one another.

The third of my top 5 directors to be featured so far (Kurosawa and Kubrick being the other 2)

*1. The Seventh Seal - A
*2. Winter Light - A
(Devastating depiction loss of faith and religion as empty ceremony)
*3. Wild Strawberries - A
*4. Cries & Whispters - A
(we never escape our past, it always haunts us)
*5. Smiles Of A Summer Night - A (Pure joy as Bergman flashes his mischievous, witty side and provides the template for future Woody Allen films)
*6. The Passion Of Anna - A (brilliant character reduction and powerhouse acting in this stark portrait of dissolving relationships)
*7. Persona - A (Another work of devastating power, though I've cooled slightly to it since my initial viewing several years ago)
*8. Autumn Sonata - A (An anger and seething rage between family members that is riveting viewing. Makes me want to be a better parent)
9. Saraband - A
*10. Through A Glass Darkly - A
(God's presence is not a comfort in the world of Bergman)
*11. Monika, Story of a Bad Girl (UK DVD I have is titled "Summer With Monika) - A (A theme often used by Fassbinder in later years: Love makes us weak and exploitable, not stronger.)
12. Dreams - A (a gem I discovered on an old beat-up VHS at a local video store. Would buy immediately on DVD. A story of faltering ambitions and unfulfilled desire)
*13. The Magician - A- (playful wit and barely contained rage in this film that borders on a horror movie at times)
*14. Shame - A- (Bergman's take on war is fascinating to view, but I don't love it in the way I do much of his work.)
*15. Hour Of The Wolf - A- (searing intensity but I find the characters a touch too remote)
16. The Magic Flute - A- (magical experience with just a couple of scenes that lag. I'm pretty much unfamiliar with opera oustide of Bugs Bunny so I have nothing to compare this to)
*17. Serpent's Egg - B+ (I liked this much maligned Bergman film quite a bit. Certainly more "story" oriented than most of his work but an effective period piece with some odd touches and a good performance by David Carradine)
*18. Fanny & Alexander - B+ (All of Bergman's usual themes and ideas are here, making this a bit tired on delivery for me, as I had seen many of his films before viewing this one. Very good, even scared me in one section which I wasn't expecting at all, but fails to soar in the ways I think this career coda was meant to.)
19. Sawdust and Tinsel - B+
*20. The Silence - B
(Too much to take in in a single viewing. The one Bergman I didn't immediately "get" and need to see again.)

Own - 18 (Own Virgin Spring and Scenes from a Marriage but haven't watched them)

Still several I'd love to see - The Rite, All These Women, The Touch, and pretty much all of his films I haven't seen.

18 [11/18 are masterpieces]! Nice job, Brook! I need to revisit Autumn Sonata and Cries and Whispers. I initially rated The Seventh Seal with a 4 but after 2nd viewing, I did realize that it is indeed a masterpiece, no less.

INGMAR BERGMAN

I've only seen one of his films. I immediately bought it and it is in my top ten for sure. I have many others in my queue.

The Seventh Seal (1957)
Persona (1966)
Cries and Whispers (1972)

Edit: Saw Persona, not too keen on that one. Some powerful sequences, to be sure, but overall it doesn't do it for me. Also Cries and Whispers.

Just edited my post to reflect my having seen Fanny & Alexander. A film far, far better than Cries & Whispers, but nowhere near as good as The Seventh Seal.

My favorite director, can you tell? I saw Cries & Whispers and then Seventh Seal and then I was hooked. I own all the region 1 DVDs and will buy any more that come out (even the few I don't like).
