Bolded films I've seen.
I've probably seen some of the WWII propaganda films, but I couldn't tell you which ones.

A question for anyone who knows. Is there a decent dvd available of Why We Fight, and if so, which version looks best?

* For whatever reason the photo recreation of the missing scenes in Lost Horizon just doesn't work for me. Now, if that actual footage were ever restored, then I would add that to my list.

*1. It's A Wonderful Life - A (all-time top 5, while it is a much beloved classic, I think the artistic qualities of the film are grossly underrated.)
*2. It Happened One Night - A
*3. Mr. Smith Goes To Washington - A
4. Arsenic And Old Lace - A-
5. Mr. Deeds Goes To Town - B+ (Something about Gary Cooper in this film rubs me the wrong way. I think I would have liked it more with a different actor in the lead)
6. Lost Horizon - B
7. You Can't Take It With You - B

It's a Wonderful Life (1946) - :star::star::star::star: - What Brook said. Brilliant wonderful film

Arsenic and Old Lace (1944) - :star::star::star: - CHARRRRRGGGGEEEE!

Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939) - :star::star::star::star: - this works so well on film, it's unbelievable how much better it functions in every respect (and it's great on video!), can't wait for the restoration to finish and a new dvd to come out!

You Can't Take It with You (1938) - :star::star::star::star: - Damn taxes and hooray for Lional Barrymore

Lost Horizon (1937) - :star::star::star: - what George said, and it's a bit over the top too.

Mr. Deeds Goes to Town (1936) - :star::star::star:1/2 - charming comedy

It Happened One Night (1934) - :star::star::star::star: - the second time is better than the first.

Lady for a Day (1933) - :star::star::star: - Overall good, entertaining and funny, but if I'd seen this on video by myself it probably would have only been a two star film. Good with an audience though.

  3. You Can't Take it with you
  4. It Happened one Night

24.A Hole in the Head (1959) **1/2

25.Pocketful of Miracles (1961) **1/2

From the rest of his filmography, I'd like to catch up with THE MIRACLE WOMAN (1931), STATE OF THE UNION (1948) and RIDING HIGH (1950; a remake of BROADWAY BILL) the most.

P.S. Mike, I'm surprised you've watched so few of Capra's films. While I admit that he's not one of my favorites anymore due mainly, as is the case with John Ford, to his regular lapses into an excess of sentimentality, one can't deny his impeccable craftsmanship and, for this reason alone, will always be one of the unmistakable giants of American cinema.
