The Spy Who Came In From The Cold - Blu-ray Edition
The acclaimed, best-selling novel by John le Carré (The Tailor of Panama), about a Cold War spy on one final dangerous mission in East Germany, is transmuted by director Martin Ritt (Hud) into a film every bit as precise and ruthless as the book. Richard Burton (Becket) is superb as Alec Leamas, whose relationship with a beautiful librarian, played by Claire Bloom (Richard III), puts his assignment in jeopardy. The Spy Who Came in from the Cold is a hard-edged and tragic thriller, suffused with the political and social consciousness that defined Ritt’s career.

This was put out right at the dawn of Criterion Blu releases so only a few titles got released that way, not too long after, everything got a Blu release, so now they seem to be going back and upgrading several of these 400 area spines like The Ice Storm and Earrings of Madame De..., as opposed to just early titles like Autumn Sonata.

Criterion didn't have the Blu-ray rights to the initial batch of Paramount titles that they licensed. This is the fourth* one of those that they've released on Blu, so it might be safe to assume that they have Blu-ray rights for all of them. (*I should point out that the first Paramount Blu-ray upgrade, DAYS OF HEAVEN, was a separate deal, but that they've since upgraded three more, and are still adding Paramount titles, gives hope that the rest will happen.)

Hopefully this means a blu of Mishima isn't too far off...

I had the original Paramount DVD release and very nearly went for the Criterion DVD release in 08. Decided to wait it out for the BD. Will be a release day purchase for me as this is among my top 10 personal favourites.

Yes, I have the Paramount DVD as well and will upgrade to the Criterion blu...I love the film as well and was holding out for a blu.

I would like to see The Russia House get a blu-ray release as it is another thoughtful spy thriller based on a John le Carre story and features what I think is one of Sean Connery's best performances.
