    The Fallen Idol

The Fallen Idol was the first of three collaborations between director Carol Reed and writer Graham Greene, who would go on to create the legendary The Third Man, and is a masterpiece in its own right. An elegant, thrilling balancing act of suspense and farce, this tale of the fraught relationship between a boy and his beloved butler, who the child believes to be guilty of murder, is a visually and verbally dazzling knockout, with enough tricks up its sleeve to stand with the best of early Hitchcock.

    Pandora's Box

G.W. Pabst's controversial melodrama Pandora's Box, which follows the downward spiral of the fiery, brash, yet innocent showgirl Lulu, is one of silent cinema's great masterworks. Kansas native and onetime Ziegfeld girl Louise Brooks's legendary persona was defined by the character of Lulu, whose sexual vivacity has a devastating effect on everyone around her. As daring and stylish as ever, Pandora's Box is presented here as never before, with a newly restored digital transfer and the option of four dazzling accompanying scores.

    The Double Life of Véronique

While Krzysztof Kieslowski's "Three Colors" Trilogy (Blue, White, and Red) may have cemented his status as one of the world's great directors, his international breakthrough The Double Life of Véronique remains one of his most beloved films. Irène Jacob is incandescent as both Weronika, a Polish choir soprano, and her double, Véronique, a French music teacher. Though unknown to each other, the two women share an enigmatic, purely emotional bond. Aided by Slawomir Idziak's shimmering cinematography and Zbigniew Preisner's haunting, operatic score, Kieslowski creates an unforgettable symphony of feeling.

    Yes, finally, Pandora's Box!!

I asked about this title during a chat in 2001 and Criterion said they were really geeked up about the title but wanted to do it right. They were searching high and low for decent elements. Apparently, they finally found them.

Nov. 21 can't come soon enough!
