ALL THAT HEAVEN ALLOWS (DUAL-FORMAT BLU-RAY/DVD Edition)
This heartbreakingly beautiful indictment of 1950s American mores by Douglas Sirk (Written on the Wind) follows the blossoming love between a well-off suburban widow (Magnificent Obsession’s Jane Wyman) and her handsome and earthy younger gardener (Seconds’ Rock Hudson). After their romance prompts the scorn of her selfish children and snooty country club friends, she must decide whether to pursue her own happiness or carry on a lonely, hemmed-in existence for the sake of the approval of others. With the help of ace cinematographer Russell Metty (Spartacus), Sirk imbued nearly every shot with a vivid and distinct emotional tenor. A profoundly felt film about class and conformity in small-town America, All That Heaven Allows is a pinnacle of expressionistic Hollywood melodrama.

The Criterion DVD is very good and I hope that Written on the Wind follows closely. More Sirk on blu-ray please, particularly my favourite film of his - Has Anybody Seen My Gal.

How great that Rock Hudson's Home Movies has been incorporated into this package! Makes this release a must-buy for TWO reasons.

I'd actually kill for a Criterion reissue of There's Always Tomorrow in the proper AR. Still, this is really exciting news.

Before so many other Sirk films or before so many films by other directors?

Two of Sirk's best movies, The Tarnished Angels and A Time To Love And A Time To Die have been released on high quality Zone B locked BRDs by Eureka.

Watch All That Heaven Allows as part of a double feature with Fassbinder's Ali: Fear Eats the Soul. Then, as a lagniappe, spin Far from Heaven. Sublime, and what a study in different generational aesthetic and moral sensibilities.

Check out those screen caps over at DvdBeaver. The color is SO saturated. I'm looking forward to the next Criterion sale.
