Are you serious Jamie? I have yet to meet someone from Newfoundland that doesn't take the term Newfie with pride. Well, until now. I apologize for offending you.
It's not a big deal to me Richard, but for more and more folks from "the mainland" the "Newfie" is wearing a fishing outfit, with a beer in one hand and an EI check in the other, with fourteen kids behind him. That's making the term a more derogatory term.
Those of us in border towns like Detroit, did. We get CBC Windsor. Hockey Night in Canada is the main reason I keep an antenna hooked up to my TV. I can't get it on DirecTV (well, not as part of the standard package, anyway). They carry better coverage of the Olympics than US networks, too.
Most Americans also don't realize that Charles Barkely is the Don Cherry of basketball. Now if we could only get Charles in some huge lapels...
Not everyone is impressed with Triumph's segment - the Federal opposition is blasting the Ontario government for their part in funding the show after comments like, "they should learn to speak English", drawing more heat than the Don Cherry issue.
It was good to see Michael J. Fox on the show. He actually looks quite a bit older now. For years he looked no older than 17 or 18. Not amymore. The hockey skit from the first night was great.
...because everyone knows that whatever is said by a cigar chomping insult comic dog puppet on a show that also occasionally features a masturbating bear is bound to profoundly influence the opinion of anyone watching.
I have this feeling that if a film or TV show featured the most despicable unlikeable unsympathetic villain in the history of English-language drama and he expressed a thought critical of the French, the producers would receive a complaint. Ah well. I would be straying too far into politics to say more.
There are now a bunch of articles on the Quebec segment. I find the following qoute below funny. I would like to know since when have Ontarians had a wonderful relationship with the people of quebec. It seems like Dalton McGuinty is living in a fantasy world as most of the audience was booing when Conan mentioned the city of Montreal or the province of Quebec.
Im wondering though if this edit will be exclusive to star? or will it be a permanent edit to future airings on NBC itself as well when they eventually re-air it.
It's funny that people are taking offense from a Puppet called Triumph the 'INSULT!!!!' comic dog. What did they except.
further more I find it surprising that all these french/english politicians are offended by this; separating is still a very popular hope in Quebec, why should the rest of Canada just ignore that.
Frankly, I'm glad somebody said it finally. I'm tired of going to Montreal and have them sneer and ignore me because I can't speak French. It's obvious this bilingual thing is going very well in our country. But then again, that's just me.
I'm sorry, but I've found all the shows this week to be painfully unfunny. I think it gets old when all the guests talk about Canada the entire time. Oh yeah, the Space Needle would kick the CN Tower's ass (if it had one, that is).
That's OK Sean...I doubt I would find "Dover small talk moment" to be terribly hilarious either. But I suppose I wouldn't be the target audience for it would I?
What do you expect from individuals who desperately want their fifteen minutes of fame? Before Don Cherry was criticized by a B.C. based French language rights group, I didn't even know the West Coast ever had such a thing!
I checked out a few French language news outlets on the Internet. The incident was indeed mentioned, but it was usually the second or third item in the entertainment sections. It simply wasn't important enough to deserve any kind of headline. The incident will definitely be mentioned in tomorrow's newspapers, but I doubt it'll become any more important.
As for me, I'm well aware on how mean and rude the skit turned out. Then again, I always found the "Triumph" segments to be rather unfunny mainly because of how nasty the skits ALWAYS turn out. So I tend to tune out whenever he's on the air. As for this particular incident, it is Conan at its worst, but I won't lose any sleep over it. And I'll still keep watching the show simply because very often it can be very funny.
I'm embarassed to live in a country that makes such a big deal out of a puppet. I watched it last night, the dog was hilarious, but I never thought people would cry like 6 year olds who just were made fun of. Get a life people, it's only a joke.
