Hey guys and girls.
Completely new to this and very excited!

I'm fortunate enough to be finishing a house and have been given permission from the boss to build a little cinema room.

The room is not the biggest or even an ideal size (14 x 10) with 8.5' ceilings but finally I have a home theatre room!

This is the rough in with central pocket doors...

So far I have inherited an amp - a Yamaha HTR-5650 that I can use.

Or not!
I think I have permission for around $2500 (maybe $3000 at a stretch) and am not sure what to do next!

I'm not sure if a TV or a projector will be best, we have a TV (60" Sharp) in our lounge so this room will be more set for movie events so probably prefer a projector.

I'm looking for suggestions for kit!

I like all types of movie genres, independent to Big Bang block busters. I have a DVD player and will upgrade to blue ray or maybe just make the jump straight to 4k - not sure. I would also like to listen to music in there from time to time.

What would you suggest?

Thanks!
Did I mention I'm really excited about finally getting a theatre room!!! :)

I'd leave that 5650 out of it. For $300-400 you can get a new AVR, or a 2-3yo AVR that won't be obsolete before you've even started.Figure out your seating distance, convert it to inches...then if you want maximum size...divide the distance by 1.1. Go no smaller screen size than dividing by 1.5.Once you've figured out your screen size...then you can decide if a large plasma is big enough...or if you do need a projector.$2500 is tight for a projector, screen, AVR and speakers. It can be done...but a 60-65" plasma is much easier, budget wise.

I'll be about 12' away from the screen so...12x12 = 144144 / 1.1 = 130" or144 / 1.5 = 96"Are projectors in the $1.2k range such as the Epson 8350 worth having for this type of room or do I really need to spend more? Any budget speaker sets available for around $1k that are worth a look? I could then use the old AVR and maybe upgrade for Christmas. I'm sure the projector screen can come out of the decorating budget...

The 8350 will do 120" at just short of 12 feet from the wall. This projector is "huge". So you are losing 2 feet in depth, you have a 14' room, drop 2 feet...and another inch or two for "connections" and you are right at 115-120.

As long as you like what the 8350 does...sure it is good enough. Some BB/Magnolia have it on display.

To use that calculator, once you've chosen a projector...

Lower right, set your gain, "initial throw" and size.

In the middle where you see the projector and screen...on the left, you can adjust the throw to "what you will use"...then you can readjust the gain to come up with a usable image FL.

Use this in the "future" for projector questions. Will you need lens shift?...etc, etc

Wow that's going to be a great help - thank you.
I'm going to be away for a week or so (research time?) so decided I needed to get some more done...

Still a long way to go!

Schan1269, you don't seem too enamoured with the Epson. What is a decent lower end projector to go for?

Also, stupid question but what colour would you recommend I paint the walls? I'm guessing black or grey but I don't want to go there unless I have to!
Still a long way to go before I get to that stage :) much filling and sanding to be done, not to mention getting the pocket doors working (next job on the list!)

Thanks again for taking the time to help me out with such basic noobie questions!
