Shooting in Japan for a year would not be on my list of things to do at the current time, either.

i would think the fact that he'd have to shoot in Japan would have been known unless the script drastically changed in the last second. i'm guessing Aranofsky and the studio/producers came to some differences and they one side / both sides decided it wasn't going to work. the Japan thing is just an excuse.
