Well, I started watching Bond films when I was very young. The first six films were re-released as double-features in 1970 and in 1971, and again in the late summer of 1972. In those days I enjoyed the harmless fun but I was not blind to the dramatic discipline at work in the films, as in all films. I followed the series on the big screen throughout the 1970s and 1980s. The harmless fun continued up until the mid-1990s, when the series changed. CASINO ROYALE is not meaningless, however; it puts across a subtext of sexual politics that is unprecedented in the series, inappropriate, and at odds with what James Bond has always been about.

It makes a lot more sense to release this in October or November around the theatrical release of "Quantum of Solace".

Well this is finally out in Oz, sometime this week I'm told, and probably due to the imminent release of his 2nd go at 007 in the theatres.

My question is, has anyone here bought this 3-Disc DVD set, and if so is there a DTS track? It's be silly considering all the previous Bonds have that as an option.

Or, seeing as this film is more of a reboot then a continuation of the series, Bonds relationship with women in this film sets up the misogyny of the character to be found in later films. I have no problem with the airport scene either. On top of furthering the plot based on the Bond preventing the stock market crash that forces LeChiffe into the Casino to recoup the money he borrowed from the guerrillas, it also introduces Bonds keen deductive powers since this is his first case, and his rouge single minded attitude in that he's not even supposed to be working the case. All character traits that are keen to the Bond character. My only critsism of the film is having them play Texas hold'em at the end. I'm sure they would be playing a classier game, and this was done purely since poker got a kick start in America with all the World Tour and Celebrity poker shows. That said, it's hardly a deal breaker.

Really Richard, I'd love to hear the story of how Casino Royale kicked you in the balls and stole your woman. The merest hint of mention of the movie has you running to criticize. We get it, you don't like the film.

I'll be picking this new set up when it hits the bargain shelves.

I agree totally. Casino Royale is/was to the Bond series what "Batman Begins" is/was to the Batman series, a 'hard reboot' or refresh to the series to get it back on track.

In younger years I would have been outraged to see Q, Moneypenny etc missing, but as an adult film enthusiast I agree it had to be done for the 1st film or two. However I would be sadly disappointed if they were still both missing in his 3rd attempt at Bond, as that would be shelving items that are core deep in the Bond film ethos. I still miss seeing Desmond Llewelyn.

If anyone can also answer my previous DTS related question, that too would be appreciated.

Thanks rich_d. Would it kill Sony to be consistent with the Bond series.

Colin, tell me about it. Don't know why. IIRC Tomorrow Never Dies also arrived to Oz quite late.
