Building home theater HELP! (1 Viewer)

Hey guys! I'm planning to build a home theater however i don't know what to buy.. my budget is roughly $1000, a bit more if i have to, possibly an extra 500 for the extra oomph in sound quality. any ideas? bang for buck is always best and preferably a 5.1 setup. by the way i currently don't have a system so this will be my first Thanks

I'm in the same boat as you, but I have to say, you have an EXCELLENT starting price. You'll be able to get a really nice set up.

I'm not too sure about the receiver, as I am looking for one myself, however I can help you out with speakers.

For 5.1, there needs to be two front speakers, one on each side of the TV and one center speaker. And then of course 2 speakers behind the viewing area. As for the front two speaker, what do you prefer? Floor standing or bookshelf?

A friend of mine has both of those. The floor standing ones up in the front and the bookshelf ones in the back. He bought them together about 6 months ago and to this day has nothing but good things to say about them.

If you're going to buy pieces of your home theater system separately and just add them on as you get them, then there's a specific order you should follow. I'm not quite sure and someone more experienced will be able to help you out here, but I've heard its center speaker + subwoofer, front two and then back two.

Thanks for the suggestions they seem great! so far my system is going to be: sub: Bic F-12 a/v revceiver: Onkyo TX-SR608 but still need to work on my speakers left, right, centre and rears. i have been suggested for my speakers the Fluance SXHTB+ 5.0 Surround Sound but i might go with the polk audios instead. if thats the case then i will need a center speaker. oh and floor standing speakers for the front is prefered

With $1,000 to spend you are going to want to split your budget along the lines of 30% receiver and 70% for speakers. Speakers are your toughest decision, as it will be the major factor in how your system will sound. Suggestions are great, but a speaker I might like you might not. Therefore, your decision should be based on which speakers in your budget sound best to your ears.

As I stated to another poster, with a fairly limited budget you might be well off to consider going the refurbished route for your receiver, like accessories4less.com You can get alot more bang for your buck. For example, you could go this route for around $300 for the receiver new:

The only thing to be aware of, some of the refurbs might be a generation older, and some potentially won't pass-through 3D. if that is important, you might want to go with something like this..
