Amateur PC builder here, I'll echo what most have said: if you want to go in cheaply, just go with the pre-mades. Shop around and you'll score some great deals either from the big chain stores, or from Dell.com.
The only reason I build (and will continue to do so) is that at the high-end market, it's still considerably cheaper to build your own. The big companies have done a good job of delivering the inexpensive to mid-level PC packages to the consumer, but PCs for high-end gaming and intense multimedia apps, those are still cheaper to build because the big companies price those "extras" at premium costs, if they're even available as custom options at all.
With regards to the crapware that companies put on your PCs...get yourself a MS Windows XP disc and be done with it!
