After watching the crossover episodes, I have to say that I have a *helluva* lot more sympathy for Angel than for Buffy.

The Angel episodes "Five by Five" and "Sanctuary" were pretty damn stellar.

Here's my tentative list of the Buffy/Angel correspondence. It's mostly 1-to-1 for the first couple of seasons. I try to keep continued shows together. It might be off a little in the last couple of seasons. I'm going through both shows in order, now that I've finally gotten all of the DVDs. I'm currently rewatching B5/A2.

The only one that really matters for cross-show continuity in 7/4 is:
79. 4-13 4ADH13 05-Mar-2003 Salvage
80. 4-14 4ADH14 12-Mar-2003 Release
139. 7-17 7ABB17 25-Mar-2003 Lies My Parents Told Me
81. 4-15 4ADH15 19-Mar-2003 Orpheus

UPN screwed up on airing the Buffy ep.

Wow, awesome list, Chip. Thanks!

Just finished Season Four. My feelings are a bit mixed. I loved the arc storyline about 2/3 of the way but then it all just petered out. The "big bad" was a huge disappointment and way too much about The Initiative
was revealed too early. It was very, very cool when it was all a mystery and then, all of a sudden, not so cool anymore.

And if you need any reminding of just how pervasive a cultural influence "The Matrix" was in the year or so after its release you need only watch the final ten minutes of "Primeval" which are already more horribly dated than even the earliest episodes of the series.

What I did really enjoy where the character arcs. They seemed completely natural considering the change in surroundings and unlike the beginning of Season Three, I never felt anyone was out of character. It wasn't nearly as heavy or as angst-ridden as Seasons 2 & 3 but to try and match that would have been an un-natural fit and forced.

I also liked seeing a bit more ambition on the part of the cinematography and the directing. Wheedon was certainly at the forefront with "Hush" and "Restless" but most of the episodes were wonderfully filmed.

All in all, definitely not up to Seasons 2 & 3 but still very, very enjoyable.

Kevin,
That was my thought about the Initiative as well. They basically revealed everything in about two episodes.

And Whedon has gone on record as stating The Matrix is his favorite movie evAR, so keep that in mind.

As for Buffy on Angel, she's always a whiny, one-note bitch on Angel, but give her a break. It's the writers ;)

;),

Heh, she was a bit nicer on the follow-up episode of Buffy :)

The decision to spin-off Angel was a great idea. Angel is a much more fascinating character to me when he's not "Buffy's Boyfriend." I mentioned above about how much I like Cordelia, and by the end of Angel S1, Wes was really growing on me too. While the Angel S1 arc was relatively weak, I thought the final three episodes were stronger than Buffy's.

Kevin, do you have Buffy S5 and ANGEL S2 DVDs ready? or do you have to pick them up?

Personally, I think this is the best season that the shows ran side by side. They work well together in continuity, and ANGEL has one of it's strongest seasons, while Buffy has a great season, too.

regarding comments about the Angel finale:

I know that the ending was meant to symbolize how no matter what, Angel and co. will continue fighting. However, I would've liked to have seen some resolve. When Buffy ended, you knew more fights would likely take place, yet there was still a feeling of closure with the destruction of the hellmouth and Sunntdale and that no longer would Buffy be THE slayer (as Faith spent so long in jail) but A slayer. To me, it was a much more fitting and satisfying ending than wondering if Angel and Spike made it or not.

Kevin: I would not worry about watching them simultaneously to catch crossovers. A couple of things will happen out of order if you watch first one full season and then the next full season. But they're not problematic. But from here on out, the story arcs are so strong in each of the seasons that it would dilute their impact by jumping back and forth.

So I would agree that you should watch one full season at a time.

And here's the order I'd watch them:

B5
A2
B6
A3
A4
B7
A5.

Only minor character movements will be disrupted, and you'll encounter a minor spoiler or two by doing it this way. But that borders on anal retention, and these shows will have much more impact from here on out by watching one full season at a time.

And regarding Jay_B's argument right above this post, Jay, I really think you miss the whole point.

I hate to discuss further plot developements in this thread, but I have to respond to Jay's comments.

Kevin, please stay away from this post.

In any case, lest this thread be invaded by black boxes, this is not the place for such a discussion. Not yet anyway.

well, I believe everybody is entitled to their opinions. I am not "wrong" in preferring the way Buffy went out to the way Angel did, because it just happens to be my opinion.

Hey Kevin if you don't watch Angel s2 and Buffy s5 side by side then you NEED to see these 2 episodes "Fool For Love" and "Darla" on the same night. And you might want to consider watching the Angel episodes up until "Redefinition" before you see the Buffy episode "Crush". Oh..yeah, then theres a Buffy character who appears on Angel but the episode title itself is a plot spoiler so I'll wait til you get that far :)

I'm guessing the Angel tie-in episode deals with that issue.

Is it really that important to be caught up on Angel before seeing "Crush"? I've only get three more episodes to go before that.

It's more of a flip-side than a crossover, so, you're right, both parts can be taken alone.

Glad to see you guys enjoying these. I was in the middle of rewatching both Buffy and Angel from the beginning when I stopped rather abruptly a few months ago. I think I was at the beginning of Buffy S4 and the middle of Angel S3. I'll have to catch up later in the summer. :D

Yeah, good question, go figure. It's the finest piece of direction I have seen on TV.

It's called Buffy the Vampire Slayer... which most people can't believe could possibly be well written or directed. Although critics often saw past something as simple as the title... ;)
