I only read the first paragraph of Kachi's Official Synopsis posting, didn't want to know too much! It read like they've devised a way to create a another evil organization similar to SPECTRE as the major foe for Bond.

I've read that Moneypenny and Q will not appear in this film, it wasn't organic to have them there. But they could still appear in future films.

I disagree, there's nothing wrong with the title aside from the fact that most people aren't used to it.

As I've said on other forums, if you can accept "Octopussy" and "Moonraker" as titles you can accept "Quantum of Solace". That's not even the best comparison because I don't think it's a bad title like those two, but you get my point.

Accepting and liking are entirely different things. You act as if everyone hates every Bond title at first, which isn't the case. When "Casino Royal" was announced I didn't think it was a shitty title. When "Die Another Day" was announced I didn't think it was a shitty title. Before I saw "Octopussy" or "Moonraker" I didn't think they were shitty titles.

I think "Quantum of Solace" is a shitty title. But I'll get over it, its just a title.

Most of the titles have just been accepted for decades and weren't scrutinized and anticipated like they are now.

I don't even think it's the worst Fleming title. "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" is awkward and uninteresting and "Casino Royale" is just boring. If using that title wasn't associated with Fleming in a major way (everyone knew "Casino Royale" was the unfilmed original Bond novel, it was a lot more known than an obscure short story) people would have ripped that title apart.

The Bond series is full of unusual and different titles, many of which don't properly represent the movie at all. People are acting as if this is a series full of numbered and/or "Son of..." movie titles based on a singular name and that by using this title they're throwing everything out the window.

Historically there's really no uniform naming scheme in this series and I guarantee that after the knee-jerk reaction of hearing something "new" (this is a 48-year-old Fleming title after all) it will be accepted and even embraced.

I think what it's really going to take is people associating it with an actual movie that's part of the series as opposed to a name in an online message board or a backdrop at a press conference.

Actually I had already seen the logo in the background in the press conference photos.

Wonder if that makes it a cinch that the next film will be:

The
Pr0perty
--0f a Lady
--7

As for the title itself, it doesn't sound action packed, or intriguing, or dangerous but it does sound unusual, quantum and solace being somewhat rarely used words, but that kinda makes it stand out, giving the film an air of mystey - What does it mean in general? What could it mean in terms of the story, etc? Which is what I think a large number of audience members will ask, so it might pique interest.

The commotion over titles is a pretty strange phenomenon: No matter how much a title is hated upon announcement, the matter fades into irrelevance about a week later. But you would never know from the dramatic initial reactions that by the time the movie is released, absolutely no one is gonna be giving a shit about this "issue".

Indeed. I think the best way to describe it for me personally is that; I don't like it, but I wouldn't want them to waste their time bothering to change it. It doesn't lower my expectations for the film nor will it color my opinion upon seeing the movie.

It's not a big deal but what else is there to talk about right now? I hear they've cast Daniel Craig as Bond... ;)

I was so pleased when I heard on the radio that Quantum of Solace was to be the new Bond film.
I had read the story when it was first published and it haunted me over the years to the point that I had to re-purchase "For Your Eyes Only" last year so I could re-read it. Moments later it came to me that, of course, this would be another The Spy Who Loved Me because QOS is far from being a typical James Bond tale.
"Quantum Of Solace" has another problem besides not rolling off many people's tongues. During an NPR story on the new film there were two different pronounciations of "solace".

So, will it be saul'-iss or soul'-iss?

Absolutely LOVE the title! Elegant, lyrical and it seems to speak of the narrative content rather than just being a 13 year old WWF fans idea of something that sounds cool. The title seems to imply heavy dramatic content with some level of maturity or sophistication. I would much rather see this as the meat of the meal with the stunts and action set pieces as the seasoning rather than the converse which has been recipe used too often in the past.

What is the Fleming story, Quantum of Solace about?

Edit: Nevermind, I just checked Wikipedia. It's about Bond attending a dinner party and being told a story by some lady about something or other!

Short story spoiler: Essentially the meat of the short story of Quantum of Solice is that Bond is indeed at a dinner party. The party is dull to Bond. He meets a guest that tells him about the story of a young attractive woman who marries a man then finds her life so dull that she has an affair to spice it up. This crushes the guy, who works for the government. So after he gets over it, he decides to tell his wife that from now on, he will just be putting up a nice front in public, but when he's home, he won't look or speak to her unless necessary. Finally, he leaves to go back to Britain and leaves her with nothing. Not even a quantum of solace. So to Bond, he realizes his life is sort of like that, he has nothing. Not even a shread of human contact that feels for him. Or he realized that his life is pretty exciting compared to others.

So as posted above by Paul Scott, this title is appropriate to what I think the story involves following on with the Vesper character. I agree that I hope this film will have some mature meat with the action. Too bad Brosnan didn't get this kind of stuff, he was gunning for it.

Agreed. It seemed to me, particular in his later Bond films, that he was more of a Sean Connery/Timothy Dalton type of Bond being thrown into Roger Moore-type movies. Brosnan could deliver a quip with the best of them, but I think he was capable of a much deeper, more nuanced performance that no one seemed interested in giving him a chance to do.
