And Casablanca opened in New York in late 1942 but took the Oscar as the Best Picture of 1943 because it didn't play for one week in LA until the following year. To me, both dates are equally valid as release years and either would suffice as an anniversary date. Either way, bring it on!

For a company that has relied on franchises like THE PINK PANTHER to keep them afloat (including the beating-a-dead-horse remake and its sequel), MGM sure has dropped the ball on this one. I would pay dearly for a full Pink Panther Blu-Ray box set.

Let's not discount Warner's Archive program just yet - at least, not their Blu-ray division which has done a positively OUTSTANDING job with its limited batch of catalog. But yes, Victor/Victoria and SOB on Blu via their archive would be very welcomed indeed.

You can check the Warner Archive website yourself. Both S.O.B. and Victor/Victoria are WAC releases on DVD. No announcements have been made in regards to if, when, or where any Blu-rays will be released. However both films are already available in HD on iTunes.

I watched the original DVD of "Victor/Victoria" on an upscaling player a few weeks ago. Looked great, and a leap to Blu wouldn't need much more work.

Speaking of Blake Edwards movies in the Warner Archive, Wild Rovers is an archive release and it was streaming in HD on Warner Archive Instant for a while but has now been withdrawn. Sometimes when a title leaves the streaming service, it is because a Blu-ray is being planned.

A few quick comments on the recent UK Blu-Ray release of "The Tamarind Seed."


Impressive picture quality, and a surprisingly substantial amount of supplemental content given the relative obscurity of "The Tamarind Seed," although most of the video supplements have nothing to do with the film.


There are three archival interviews from British television, two of which are from 1972 and 1974 and feature Omar Sharif (neither of which mentions "The Tamarind Seed"; the latter Sharif interview discusses "Juggernaut"). There is another interview from 1976, which also doesn't mention "The Tamarind Seed." The 1976 interview was made in connection with the UK release of "The Return of the Pink Panther" and features Blake Edwards, Peter Sellers and (briefly) Burt Kwouk. Anyone who has followed the careers of Edwards and Sellers will find it fascinating to see them interviewed together, given the many stories of their contentious relationship.

Operation: Petticoat would also be nice to see on BD. Tony Curtis used his time with Cary Grant to good effect since he later copied Grant's accent in a few scenes in Some Like It Hot. If the studios are listening, I for one will buy every Blake Edwards film released on BD.

It's been out on Blu from Olive for a while. Looks okay...nothing special...but a huge improvement from the crumby DVD's.
