It's obviously a fake. Apple hasn't had hardware deals like that on BF for the past three years, and they're doing well now despite the recession. And they're clearly about profit over marketshare, which would be the only purpose of such a sale.

Now, they've had good prices on software. BF can be a great time to upgrade your iWork or iLife.

Agreed on the software deals, but remember, we're likely only a couple of months way from iLife & iWork '10.

I've already bought the 09 versions of both. But I hadn't seen rumors for '10 versions. Are they expected at MacWorld or such?

Yeah, without Macworld it remains to be seen whether iLife & iWork '10 will get their annual January kickoffs.

As stated when they announced their dropping out last year, shipping products in January sucks. I'd say it's probably worse for software than hardware, since readiness is more of a judgement call: is it OK to ship with these dozens of known bugs. So you're deciding whether to kill yourself over the holidays to ship. I doubt we'll see iLife and iWork.

And FWIW, Macworld Expo also didn't like having to prep for January, so it's now February 9-13.

I believe that. iWork for $49 is the same price, I think, as previous years' BF pricing. Note that (in the past) any corporate / edu discounts stack on the BF pricing.
