My top 20 for 1999, a very good year in film. Tremendous by recent standards especially. Those top 3 shot right into my all-time favs list which I'm usually pretty stingy with for new stuff.

Rushmore (if we are counting it by public, not NY/LA)
Fight Club
Run Lola Run
American Beauty
The Matrix

Insider
Lock, Stock, 2SB
South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut
Toy Story 2
Bringing Out the Dead

Eyes Wide Shut
Payback (hey, I love the consistent tone/style here)
The Iron Giant
Austin Powers TSWSM
Dogma

Blair Witch Project
Being John Malkovich
Three Kings
Sleepy Hollow
Galaxy Quest

And some others I enjoyed in various amounts -

The Sixth Sense, Detroit Rock City, Dick, The Mummy, Big Daddy, Summer of Sam, Talented Mr. Ripley, Election, Office Space, Limey, The Ninth Gate, Topsy Turvy, Go, The Green Mile, The Limey, Bowfinger, Tarzan

I can't BELIEVE I forgot to list The Virgin Suicides
You didn't. This is a 2000 film by all but the rarest of standards. It didn't even hit NY/LA until 2000, so it was qualified for 2000 Oscars and wide released in 2000 as well, which is why it was included on our tops of 2000 lists back then.

I'll have to throw in the lone dissent so far. I did not think 1999 stuck out much over any other year. There were some very good movies, but I never really felt there were that many more than other years. It is probably because I am not a fan of many of the "acclaimed" films that year.
No, you are not the lone dissenter. I thought there were alot of good movies in 1999, but very few if any great ones. I remember when American Beauty won the Oscar for Best Picture many in this forum were stating that it won because of a weak field of competition. Of recent Oscar winners, I think AB will hold up the least in the long run. Come to think of it, the only DVDs I own from 1999 (and I own over 150) are The Phantom Menace, Tarzan, The Matrix and Toy Story II.

My favorites were The Matrix, Sixth Sense, The Insider, Iron Giant and The Limey. Did not care for Eyes Wide Shut, The Phantom Menace, Three Kings or Being John Malkovich. Luke warm on AB, Magnolia and Fight Club.

My picks (no particular order):

THE MATRIX
TOY STORY 2
STAR WARS: EPISODE I-THE PHANTOM MENACE
THE SIXTH SENSE
THE GREEN MILE
THE IRON GIANT

I will never forget watching TPM over and over and over again...and it got better, too. I was initially disappointed, but the movie really hit me on the second viewing.

I also saw THE MATRIX three or four times...

hm, i personally thought '99 was a weak year. oh well
This blows my mind. How many movies did you actually see? How can you say it's a weak year if you haven't seen all the highly regarded films on all our lists? It obviously was a weak year for YOU, but in reality it was a grand year for movies.
