I heard on the news last night that veteran actor Barnard Hughes has died. He was 90. He was in Lost Boys and Tron.

    RIP

He had a long and successful career in movies and TV and on stage, but I'll always remember him for the grandfather in Lost Boys and the irascible country doctor in Doc Hollywood. He could turn throwaway lines into classics.

One of my favorite Barnard Hughes performances is in the political play CONFLICT OF INTEREST with Edward Binns and Roland Winters. Showtime telecast it in 1982. Everyone in the cast was wonderful. I watched it again a couple of months ago and was reminded what a literate and intelligent script it is. No black and white villainy - many, many shades of gray.

Maybe he's just playing dead and doing a damn fine job at it.

Didn't he play a modern day Merlin in a TV show where he also ran a motorcycle shop? I liked the concept of that show. He was good in a lot of films (Sister Act, etc.). He will be missed.
